Sooooooo I ended up having to go back to the mental facility. This is a video log I'm keeping of my time there. Why? Mainly because I'm bored as hell, and it helps to be able to "talk" to my friends. Fortunately, I'm not in a lock down unit, so I'm allowed to have my camera. And I'm even allowed to leave on Sundays to go home, so I can upload the videos. This one is the first, when I was still in the hospital. **This series of videos is real. None of these are parodies, jokes, or comedy. I'm not doing those right now. Sorry, guys. I'm just not up to it.***

when talking about the detection for THC, what do they mean about the cutoff concentration?

when talking about the detection for THC, what do they mean about the cutoff concentration?for example: The cutoff concentration recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA/NIDA) for a positive result in an immunoassay test is 50 ng/ml. The cutoff for GC-MS is generally 15 ng/ml.

Answer by Adam S.
They are referring to the amount of THC metabolites detected in a given volume of specimen (in this case, urine).

If there are 50 nanograms of THC metabolites per milliliter of urine, the test will trip positive. If there is less than this amount, the test will return negative.

This is kind of the theory behind many attempt to elude detection. Drug users who drink a LOT of water before a test can effectively dilute their urine to the point where a positive test result is less likely. The testing people know about this tactic though, and if your specimen appears to have been diluted in this manner (they can tell by the specific gravity of the urine), it will be disqualified and you would be required to retest.

If you're trying to avoid detection, it's best to remain well hydrated, but don't chug a half gallon of water an hour before the test, they can tell if you do this and it doesn't work reliably anyway.

Mental Health: can a mental health social worker do this?

can a mental health social worker do this?My fiance was committed to the psychiatric department by the police he has to go to see the judge thing monday. he was commited on wed night. i talked to him on thursday when he called me. I tried to call on friday but couldnt talk to him. I talked to his mother and she said the social worker told her there was a no contact order between the two of us. Why would they do this? Can this be permanent or what is going on? No one will give me any information. I am currently 6 months pregnant with his child so its making things worse.

Answer by 20 Year Nurse
Obviously, someone in a position of authority decided that it would be best if he not have contact with you. Nothing you can do about it.
No one is required to tell you anything and no one here can give you any answers. We don't know the whole situation.
Your being pregnant has nothing to do with it to them.

Answer by ♬♫Autism's Beautiful Face♬♫♪
You cannot get carers allowance if you earn over £95 a week ..
Can i ask apart from dla what else does your partner claim does he get income support i have to ask how you pay rent and council tax so i can help ...if he gets income support as well you wont be able to work because it will effect his income support as well,

Answer by Lestat
If your earning are over £95 per week you will loose your CA. You should also be claiming Income support and getting full council tax and hosuing benefit.

Does Kaiser offer mental therapy for teens?

Does Kaiser offer mental therapy for teens?I've been wanting to see a psychiatrist or psychologist for a while now. I'm 17 and I have Kaiser health coverage. I'm not exaclty sure what's included in our plan, though.
Are the therapists at Kaiser helpful? Or would it be best for me to go to a private therapist? Would Kaiser cover any portion of that? Are there specific hours that the psychologists at Kaiser are available? And how do I go about asking my parents about going to therapy without having to tell them everything?

Ah, typical teen stuff. Sorry for the cliche but any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes they do. They have psychiatrist and psychologists. Give them a call and ask about your coverage and when they are available.

my mum as mental health problems i took her to the mental health team and they wont give us help what do i doi need help mental health team wont help who do i go to next

Answer by Minny
She needs to be referred by her doctor for mental health treatment. so have her go to the doctors first.
After that is done she is called in for an assesment.

If they diagnose an issue, only then will she be placed on medication/given therapy.

Answer by TSM_908
You have to be refered by the patient normal doctor - doing it this way will work as long as her doctor knows or diagnoses a problem.
Hope this helps and my best wishes for you Mum.

Answer by Gaurav R
I think u should take her to the Government Mental Hospital & get her full check up done .
Wish u all the very best.

Answer by Christal D
The easiest, fastest way to get her help is to take her to the ER. This is probably going to result in hospitalization, but she will be able to get the help she needs and stabalized on medication if that is what she needs. You can check out the psych wards in your area and make an informed decision of which hospital to take her too if you think there is enough time for that.

good luck

Mental Health: Man convicted of murder for passing on HIV to partners?

Man convicted of murder for passing on HIV to partners? What are your opinions on this case?

Man Convicted of Murder for Passing on HIV to Partners

TORONTO — An HIV-positive Hamilton man has become the first person in Canada to be convicted of murder for spreading the virus that causes AIDS.

A jury of nine men and three women deliberated for 2 1/2 days before finding Johnson Aziga guilty Saturday on two counts of first-degree murder and 10 of the 11 counts of aggravated sexual assault that he faced.

Aziga, 52, was found guilty of attempted aggravated sexual assault in the case of one of his former partners.

"It's certainly precedent setting here in Canada because we now have a conviction for first-degree murder involving HIV transmission," Crown Attorney Karen Shea said after the verdict came down.

The Crown said Aziga endangered the lives of 11 women by having unprotected sex with them and failing to disclose he had HIV.

Seven of the women tested positive for HIV and two died of AIDS-related cancers, the jury heard. The four other women tested negative.

Prosecutors painted Aziga as a callous and arrogant man who "outright lied" about having HIV to women with whom he had sex, and in some cases, convinced his partners condoms were no longer necessary.

Aziga's lawyers argued their client did not have the "mental wherewithal" to deliberately endanger his former lovers, citing a brain disorder, heavy drinking and post-traumatic stress.

"If you have a brain disorder, then you do things that people who do not have that kind of condition do," defence lawyer Davies Bagambiire said after the verdict was handed down.

"Did it deprive him of the capacity to form the intent to commit murder? Obviously, the jury found otherwise."

A native of Uganda and former research analyst at the Ministry of the Attorney General in Ontario, Aziga was diagnosed with HIV in 1996.

He was counselled not to have unprotected sex and to tell partners of his health status, jurors heard during testimony from public health officials.

Despite several warnings and being served with an order under the Health Protection and Promotion Act to wear condoms and inform his partners he had HIV, Aziga continued to have unprotected sex, jurors heard.

In order to find Aziga guilty of aggravated sexual assault, the jury had to find the women did not have HIV before they had sex with Aziga and would not have agreed to sex had they known he carried the virus that causes AIDS.

To return with a verdict of guilt on the two first-degree murder charges, jurors had to conclusively find Aziga infected his two former partners and that their deaths stemmed from an aggravated sexual assault.

The Crown maintained two women, who can only be identified as H.C. and S.B., were essentially injected with a "slow-acting poison" that destroyed their immune systems and, because they didn't know Aziga had HIV, they were unable to seek effective treatment, leading to their cancers and to their deaths.

Aziga is the first person in Canada, possibly the world, to be found guilty of murder for lethally infecting a partner with HIV, legal observers said.

He has been in custody since his arrest in 2003 and his trial was rescheduled four times as he fired his Legal Aid-funded defence teams.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Thomas Lofchik refused to grant a fifth delay last September after defence lawyers said they needed more time to prepare.

Proceedings began in October and were scheduled to run six weeks but spanned into March.

A murder conviction carries a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

Aziga will be sentenced May 7.

My brothers getting sectioned under the mental health act What to expect?

My brothers getting sectioned under the mental health act What to expect? They are sending police and ambulance around to the house later on today to section my brother?
He knows nothing about it.. does anyone know what I can expect to happen please? Im really nervous about it all not to mentions soo upset?
Anyone have any experiences they can share?

Thanks

Answer by pm0006
The best thing you can do is stay out of the way. This is likely to be a traumatic event for your brother and possibly also for you. Just let the police and ambulance people get on with their job. The important thing will be to help your brother recover, visiting him in hospital regularly talking to him and listening to him. The police and ambulance people will show up, they will read the grounds for sectioning him, explain that he is now sectioned and will take him away in the ambulance. There is a chance that they might sedate him too, though that would hopefully be unlikely.

Answer by Kat
I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how that must feel. I'm certain your brother may feel a combination of fear, anger and confusion over being forced into a mental health care facility without his consent. Obviously it has been deemed by doctors and a social worker that this is for his own safety as well as the safety of others around him.

I would say prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I don't know what his mental state is right now. Is he prone to fits of violence? It may be a very disturbing thing for you to witness, especially if he becomes very afraid or lashes out physically. My best advice would be to let the police officers and hospital staff tend to him as best they can. They may try and restrain him and administer a sedative if he becomes very upset.

Your brother will be treated no differently than any other person in the hospital (in other words, he won't be treated worse or like a criminal because he's been sectioned), although he may not have certain privileges as patients who are there on their own volition. For example, he may not be permitted to check himself out of the hospital or leave the grounds without his doctor's consent. That is for his own protection.

Mental Health vs Exercise?

Mental Health vs Exercise? So, I know all the talk about exercise will make you feel better mentally. But what if you are having a hard time just making it through everyday tasks like keeping house (moderately clean) basic grooming, cooking dinner, and even getting out of bed. How do you get the energy and focus to even begin to think about exercise as something else that needs to be done during the day?

I'm asking because I have Bipolar. I've had it since I was 13 (am 28 now) and I'm currently at a point where its not very stable. My medications are being changed and I have gained about 30-40 pounds since the summer because of meds and depression. I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall. Exercise would probably make me feel better/help me lose a few pounds BUT I can barely get through my day.

Has anyone else struggled with this? Should I force myself to exercise (which I'm not sure I can do at this point) or should I really just worry about getting stable first and then worry about the exercising?

Thanks!
EDIT: This isn't a question about diet. I've figured that part out. Its about balancing a mental illness and exercise. Read the question.
EDIT: I strongly suggest no one with a diagnosed mental illness quit taking their medication WHATSOEVER!!! You not only will become unstable again but you will not FEEL ANY BETTER!!! When you want to asscociate people who murder with people with mental illness, look at the ones who have gone off their meds!!!! Bad idea. Poor poor advice. You wouldn't tell someone with lung cancer to just jog around the block and they'll be cured right? Sickos.

Exercise is 1000x better than those pills. Go run till you throw up or at least till your doubled over in pain. Its like all your depression is destroyed by your physical discomfort. Your not depressed because your to busy thinking, "God this hurts." The more pain you put yourself through the better you feel. I know that statement goes against itself, but I swear it's true.

I am debating on bringing a lawsuit against the hospice and hospital?

I am debating on bringing a lawsuit against the hospice and hospital? My wife was in the hospice for three days as well as at the hospital the same time. Both facilities failed to notify me being the next of kin and decisions were made without my consent. The department of Health and Mental Hygiene cited the hospice and I immedicately asked that an investigation be done at the hospital.
In a one on one meeting with the legal counsel of the hospice and their COO, they stated they were sorry but offered nothing for the pain and suffering I have been dealing with.
After the report was released, the COO offered a memorial service for my wife and a plaque to put in their memorial garden but I was informed they are taking advantage of my emotions!
How this all began is my stepdaughter had committed fraud by signing she was the next of kin and the primary care giver.
The investigation showed there was no paperwork to show there was any of this and by both facilities not following proper protocol as far as recogniziing the next of kin, end of life decisions for my wife were not properly made.
Matter of fact as I am sending this, my stepdaughter has disappeared.
The anniversary of my wife's death is May 26. It will be a year. I have been investigating this since the day I received her death certificate.

Answer by S. R.
Go get a free consultation from the best known personal injury lawyer in your area ASAP. If you have a case they will get close to a third. Also were any criminal laws broken by having her residing in two different locations at the same time?
Their lawyer and COO are not going to help you.

Answer by cricket
I hate to sound crude but you probably just need to move on with your life. Your wife has passed on and nothing will bring her back and a long process in court will be more exhausing and painful than it's probably worth. You can only begin to heal after you let go of all the resentment. I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you find peace in the near future.

Answer by msmag
First I am so sorry about your wife passing away in this manner. It made me so sad to read this.
You need to speak with an attorney ASAP.
If it would make you feel better on that day call all your close friends and let them know your having your own memorial service.Step daughter would be invited to share the pain she has caused.
God is with you, your in my prayers.

Depression, OCD, anxiety, & more? Help me...?

Depression, OCD, anxiety, & more? Help me...?The last three times that I have attempted to post this question, I either pushed a button that magically erased all of my words, or went to a new tab on my iPod only to find that when you return to the previous page, all of your writing disappears.  I am going to attempt to write this question one more time, but if something goes wrong again, I'll just assume it was fate and that I was meant to die of depression/suicide.
-
On the National Mental Health Association website, it states this:

On average, people with OCD see three to four doctors and spend over nine years seeking treatment before they receive a correct diagnosis. Studies have also found that it takes an average of 17 years from the time OCD begins for people to obtain appropriate treatment.

If that information is true, then I see no hope for myself.  I've spent my entire life dealing with OCD, yet it took me over half of it to realize what was wrong with me.  My fourteenth birthday is in five days, and I have yet to even tell someone that I suffer from OCD besides my best friend that lives twelve hours away.  I have only seen two counselors in my life.  Before I quit public schooling, I saw the school counselor, but I received no aid from her whatsoever.

Now, I have quit public schooling because I did not want to deal with my depression, OCD rituals, or the constant fear of being judged by others.  I am now seeing a family counselor, and although she is slightly less difficult to speak with than the school counselor, she cannot help me.  From what little information I have gathered about this counselor, she only specializes in family problems or petty teenage situations.
Additionally, I have called a suicide hotline once but hung up because I was once more afraid of communicating with a stranger.  Minutes later, they called back, my parents listened to the message, and I crawled under my bed hoping to die.  My dad called the hotline back and shoved the phone under the bed for me to talk to this woman.  After about ten minutes of my silent crying, she finally got me to speak. I started to not tell her anything, however, and when she asked me to hand the phone back to my father, I panicked and blurted out that I had bad OCD and anxiety. Yet she was only interested in my rare panic attacks and did not give me any advice on how to get help.

I can't talk to people that I'm not comfortable with. I just can't. In my prior school, I never spoke a word to anyone unless required. People used to ask me, "Why are you so quiet, Abby?"

Now that I am homeschooled and secluded from society as much as possible, my the degree of my anxiety has lessened. This also makes OCD thoughts less frequent and easier to resist, although that may just be my imagination. There are indeed some benefits of never going out, but I don't want to live this way. I'm only nearly fourteen years old. I want a life, and I want to be normal.

I'm not totally sure of what I'm asking. I just know I need help, and the only way I can effectively communicate with someone I don't know is through writing. I guess I'm desperate and I need advice...
Ha, I am finally able to submit my question, and I get no answers? So funny; maybe it is a sign from God that I should end my life. I would done it already, but I'm not particularly brave.
Well, thanks everyone for nothing. Literally.
Well nevermind. ?

Answer by Doctor J
Hi Abby. First, it is obvious that you are very intelligent. So, start by giving yourself some credit for that.

Also, please appreciate that you are not alone - many, many people are experiencing the same issues you are facing.

Next, give yourself some more credit - you are making a variety of efforts to help yourself!

I have a variety of suggestions for you.

1) Continue to call and talk with the hotline counselor. The more you talk with her, the more comfortable you will become with her. She is there to help you - give her that chance.

2) Continue to communicate with your friend. Sharing your feelings and fears with another person always helps!

3) Write about your feelings and fears - keep a journal and write just for yourself. Again, the more you can express your feelings, the more you will be able to accept and manage them.

4) You are aware of your issues, so you are NOT going to need 17 average years to get proper help. Continue to seek help - your family doctor may be a good place to start.

5) Finally, it is important to understand that the type of problems you are experiencing often have a physiological CAUSE. Dietary imbalances, chemical sensitivities, environmental pollutants, chronic digestive problems, and a variety of other conditions can impact the functioning of your nervous system and contribute to, or even cause, your symptoms. So, consider getting a thorough evaluation by a health care professional trained in: 1) nutrition, and 2) environmental medicine.

Because you impress me with your intelligence and research skills, I would also like to recommend an excellent book on these issues by Sherry Rogers, M.D. The book explains the many known causes of conditions known as "affective disorders" (depression, OCD, panic attacks, etc.) and how to properly treat those underlying causes. The name of the book is: "Depression Cured At Last" - but it covers the entire spectrum of problems you are experiencing. It is out of print, but still available from Amazon.com from various used book dealers.

Best wishes and good luck.

Answer by Brian M
Dear friend, I have also expierienced these symptoms, it is also a struggle to over cem, however it is very possible and well within your abiliies, trst me, the isses which I have conquered leave me doubt hat if I can beat those other can do the same. unforunatl there isn't a simple or single solution, everyones circustances differ, due to our issues arising from personal expierince and emtions in our lives, see a therapist, or social worker at the very least, and aim for small yet notcibe results, rather than the mentality that these isues can all be adressed together at once, and be honest with yourself, then you will start to unravel the motives behind your actios, and impulses. Then you will no longer be effected so easily but derpession and OCD.

Answer by lisa
you are suffering from depression and anxiety. ocd is a part of anxiety disorder. consult a good psychiatrist/counseller/psychologist. educate youself about anxiety and depression. i was in depression 5 years ago. then i consult a psychiatrist and got treated. but since past 1 or 2 years i have been suffering from anxiety, mild ocd etc. but now the anxiety and ocd thoughts are less frequent. now i am happy again and i am enjoying the things that i couldn't be enjoyed before. so don't give up hope. suicide is not a solution. the problem is depression, anxiety and ocd. solve these problems with the help of a good psychiatrist/counseller.

I don't think that those OCD stats apply to you. I have been diagnosed with OCD since I was twelve, and I developed it around 10, so that was only 2 years. It did take a while to get the appropriate treatment (I started CBT at 16), but that's nowhere near 17 years. The first person I saw diagnosed me with OCD. So those these may be the average outcome, there's nothing to say that this has to happen to you. Show your parents some information on OCD, and tell them you want treatment. Yes, you'll have to talk to a therapist, and CBT is hard work, but I think you can do it. Email me if you want some good articles or websites. I would also recommend joining the stuck in a doorway forums if you haven't already. They are an excellent support forum which I joined about a year ago. my email is evilfudge17@yahoo.com (I am 17, girl, have dx'd OCD, thought disorder(which I disagree with), depression, anxiety, and psychosis/schizophrenia)

Does anyone here work in the mental health field in Michigan?I worked as a Behavioral health tech in Arizona for several years and have just moved back to Michigan due to family commitments. Mental Health: how can a military spouse have a successful career as a mental health counselor or psychologist?

how can a military spouse have a successful career as a mental health counselor or psychologist?Would it be realistic for a recent graduate with a BA in Psychology to follow her Air Force officer through flight training (2 years) and subsequent duty stations (every 3 years) while hoping to complete a mental health counseling degree (3-4 years).

Would the moving around be detrimental to her career? Would licensing on a state by state basis be difficult? What education and job opportunities are there via the Air Force/Military? Are there any psychologists out there that are married to military officers? Please help.

Answer by Warbird Pilot
Most of the base hospitals where he'll be stationed will have counselors. But the choice is yours, not ours.

Answer by Daisy
The military is very concerned about their members being educated. Every post (we were Army) we were stationed at had some sort of college nearby. You're talking about a specialized degree, so it would be harder probably, but I doubt impossible for you to go on and get a mental health degree. I did have one friend who stayed back when her husband was assigned to Germany and completed her law degree. You might have to look at that somewhere down the line.

As for a career, once you are licensed, try to get on with the Federal government. Most military bases have medical facilities and could use a mental health specialist. If you work on a US military facility, you wouldn't have to worry about different state licensing requirements. Good luck....

I am a navy wife and have my Masters in Social Work and work as a Crisis Counselor. It may take some extra time to finish your degree if you PCS while you are in the middle of school but it is doable. I thankfully only had 5 months left of graduate school when my husband enlisted. So by the time he got his first PCS orders I was done with school. Since I have my bachelors in social work it only took me three years part time to get my masters. You could easily completed a full time counseling masters program in 2 years. To be a psychologist you are really looking at having to complete your masters then go for a PhD or PsyD or get into a combined program which can take about 5 years. It really depends on your preference.
Moving has made is difficult for me to obtain my supervision towards my LCSW because in Ohio independently licensed social workers didn't charge you for supervision but in Virginia they do and it is not something we can afford at this time.
However, after searching for about 6 months I received the job I have now in emergency mental health and I hope to start my supervision soon. I am actually putting in an officers packet for the navy for their new social work internship program.
You would have to take each state on a case by case basis but many states have very similar licensing laws once you receive your masters degree (at least for counselors and social workers-not sure about psychologists)

US army base shooting sparks mental health debate - 7 Nov 09

After an army psychiatrist killed 13 people at a US military base in Texas, concerns are being raised about the mental health of the military staff. Families of soldiers at the Fort Hood base say Thursday's shootings are just a symptom of a much wider and increasingly urgent problem. There have been dozens of suicides at the facility in recent years. Sebastian Walker reports from Fort Hood.

How can I make my novel more interesting?

How can I make my novel more interesting? It's about a dysfunctional marriage: the husband is an alcoholic and abuses the wife; the wife becomes addicted to cocaine; the husband has affairs and the wife's mental health deteriorates. The novels ends with the husband pimping the wife and the couple living in a seedy motel by the ocean.

How can I make it more interesting? I don't know; maybe I'm being too hard on myself, but something seems missing.

Mental Health: Is it a good idea to totally give up my mental health services ?

Is it a good idea to totally give up my mental health services ?I'm going to have a meeting with my new worker from the department of health (in my state). And I'm going to tell I'm quitting because I have to wait till I'm 24 (I'm 21) until I can get my associates. Then I'll have to wait till I'm 30 (5-6 years later) to get my bachelor's. On top of that all of the programs are BS and there's really not that many bright people at these programs. I also eventually want to stop therapy, and eventually stop taking my medicine altogether.

If I should continue taking their services give me one reason why I should.
To "Barcode" I've been doing therapy before I had DMH's services. So it wouldn't matter that's why I'm quitting and eventually will stop therapy and meds permanently.

Answer by Barcode
Beats the hello outta me, Bubba. It's YOUR life. Live it like you want to live it.

First - you need to get it thru your head the world does NOT owe you a living. Life is what YOU make it - not wishing or dreaming - or fantasizing. If you don't like what's going on in your life - then - it's up to YOU to make changes.
Life is not always the way it's supposed to be. It's just the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.
If you cannot deal with what life has to offer - then you need to seek psychological counseling so you can learn how to deal with your issues.

It can be difficult, sure, but for me, it all worked out for the best. I wish you well......

I decided after college i would cut them off completely as well. I feel they just dont understand me. Especially since my mother hasnt been in my life for 11 years [[I am 15]] And yes i know im a teen but dont think i am naive. I know that most teens dont like their parents at all but sometimes when me and my father [who i live with and my little brother] get into screaming at the top of our lungs fights it gets too hard to handle. And theyve been happening more and more often now. And i hate that everytime i do something bad my mother has to get into it. Like where is she all the times i do something good? I sometimes feel she has no right to be yelling at me and telling me all my punishments when she hasnt been around for 11 years! And she is NOT perfect. She does drugs was an alchoholic. Had 4 kids with 3 different men. Has bi polar disease. Addicted to prescription pills. She just doesnt have the right. Im sorry im getting carried away. Anyway, i honestly feel that once im done with college I won't need them.

Why Won't Donald Trump release his LONG-FORM Birth Certificate?

Why Won't Donald Trump release his LONG-FORM Birth Certificate?I was just shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that the so called "birth certificate" Donald Trump released exclusively to novelty toilet paper magazine Newsweek is a giant piece of boop. According to The Smoking Gun:

"[T]he document is not an official New York City birth certificate, but rather a document generated by Jamaica Hospital, where Trump's mother Mary reportedly gave birth in June 1946. Official birth certificates are issued (and maintained) by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Office of Vital Records."

To make matters worse:

"Jamaica Hospital has been the recipient of significant financial largesse from the Trump family. In fact, the Queens institution includes the Trump Pavilion, a nursing and rehabilitation facility that was named for Mary Trump."

I just don't understand why Trump would have this hospital he pays print up a "birth certificate." Surely he can go to his lock box or bedroom drawer and pull out his official LONG-FORM birth certificate like any real AMERICAN born in AMERICA.

I'm just asking Donald Trump to show the public his birth certificate. Why is he making an issue of this?

REPUBLICAN Chester A. Arthur was president even though he was born in Canada.

Why should we elect a president with a history of mental health illness?

Why should we elect a president with a history of mental health illness? It has been determined clinically that Senator John McCain has a history of mental illness. In fact, the senator has openly discussed attempting suicide twice.

The mental trauma which he suffered as a POW simply did not vaporize upon his release. Frequently, manifestations of mental health illness can resurface long after a particular given trauma. That is why many people who have a history of mental health illness are barred from certain types of employment positions. Society and government have the duty and responsibility to protect the health and welfare of the mentally ill as well as protect the other members of society who could be harmed by the actions or inactions of a person with a mental health illness.

As a senator, John McCain has not had the kind of authority of power that comes with the office of the presidency. A president wields much more control over the well-being of the country and its citizenry. Such authority and power must never be compromised by the inability to think clearly or make sound decisions for the country and its citizenry.

Earlier on in the primary election, Senator John McCain released medical records pertaining to his physical well-being. Given that Senator McCain does have a history of mental health illness, should the senator be made to release his records pertaining to his mental health?

I am a registered republican and have been for years. I am a married white 49 years-old male soon to be 50. Although I find myself in disagreement with the republican party on many issues, especially involving the war in Iraq, the economy, and affordable health care for all Americans, I am particularly concerned about Senator McCain's mental stability. Perhaps unlike many families across the US, my immediate family has a medical background. My wife is a clinical psychologist, our son is an internist (MD), and our daughter is a mental health social worker.

Cluster B: The Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)

HPD Behavior:
The HPD behavioral style is charming, dramatic, expressive, demanding, self-indulgent...inconsiderate...easily excited, and intolerant of frustration, delay, and disappointment. The words and feelings they express appear shallow and simulated rather than real or deep.

These individuals can be quite effective in situations where a first impression is important and vague expression of ideas is preferred over precision. They are less effective where performance is measured by objective measures of competence, diligence, thoroughness, and depth. Acting, marketing, politics, and the arts are fields where individuals with HPD will do well and manage competition effectively.

The body, erotically or via illness, is often used by individuals with HPD to attract the attention of others. They will engage in inappropriately exaggerated smiles and continuous elaborate hand gestures...

Individuals with HPD...hide their true cognitive sterility and emotional poverty. HPD cognition is global, diffuse, and impressionistic; these individuals appear incapable of sustained intellectual concentration; they are distractable and suggestible. They avoid introspective thought.

...The[y] are prone to alcoholism and drug addiction and are quite adept at denying the related behaviors. They seek easy escape from pain, deny negative consequences, and fail to observe or accept responsibility for the impact of their behavior on others.

what would you do in this situation as a case manager?

what would you do in this situation as a case manager? You are a case manager in a community mental health center. Many of your clients are homeless and have either mental disorders or substance abuse and health problems.

Health problems in the homeless are exacerbated by their homeless status. Exposure to extreme temperatures and a lack of sanitary facilities, nutritious food, restful sleep, and support networks worsen infections and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The homeless are less likely to take their medications for their mental and other physical diseases. Most homeless do not seek health care until they are so sick or injured that they have to be transported to the emergency room by ambulance.

Although there is a community health center in the county, it is not accessible financially or geographically to the homeless. After determining the needs of the homeless population in your case load, you meet with the leaders of all the agencies that provide services to the homeless, including the health center. You learn that there are three shelters, one food bank, and two faith-based initiatives providing services to the homeless.

A collaborative decision is made to provide basic health services in the shelters. The health center will supply the clinical providers, supplies, and equipment; the shelters will provide the space, furniture, and utilities; and the mental health center will provide on-site case management that includes counseling and support groups.

It looks like you have accomplished a great deal already. There is one other thing you might be able to offer and that is daytreatment. For mentally ill, homeless people it would have to be adapted to their needs. Eg. activities like mending cloths, cooking, socialization by playing group games, and you can always smuggle in mental health education and check if they took meds. People would attend if you had the coffee pot going and provided plenty of smoke breaks and some snacks. Good Luck.

Activities for mental health inpatients?

Activities for mental health inpatients?I am a nursing student about to begin a Psych/Mental Health clinical next week. Part of our responsibilities include providing activities for the patients, who have mental illnesses ranging from severe depression to bipolar disorder to schizophrenia.

The inpatient floor has rules for what can be brought in: no sharp stuff (including writing utensils), nothing that could cause harm if swallowed (glue, etc), no ribbons/rope (theyre suicidal). I also don't want to bring in something too competitive (like cards), because alot of these patients have agressive tendencies. We are not allowed to watch TV/movies with them.

What can I bring to entertain these patients?

Answer by OracSeas
If its in the budget bring in ceramic items they can paint. (you might also inquire at your local ceramic shop if they'd be willing to part with some of their unused inventory for a good cause! Many paints are non toxic and you can limit the amount they use. You could also bring in cupcakes and then the decorations that go on top. You'd have to have an alternative if one of them were diabetic though or allergic to things like nuts. You could do sandplay with them as well. Music and movement is an idea. Tossing rubber balls to one another in a circle. Making collages with pre cut items, hard beans, some glitter, and tape or a non toxic glue subsitute. Reading a well chosen book for group discussion may bring another dimension. Best wishes to you in your field - they are fortunate to have you.

Answer by Puzzler
It occurs to me that if these people could genuinely feel productive rather than just 'passing time' it might be beneficial to their mental health.
My idea was to take a video camera and ask your patients to allow you to record short clips of themselves telling jokes (appropriate for the young), singing children's songs, doing silly skits, etc. Tell them that this video will later be used to entertain young hospital patients or disabled children, etc.
The motivation to be creative for the benefit of others who are suffering should prove quite therapeutic.

I'd have lost it when I was inpatient if I couldn't write. I spent 90% of my free time journaling. What about crayons? Art is always fun and there's not much wrong you can do with crayons and non-toxic markers.

Answer by Hopefully Helpful
If there are some of those boards with the markers that you wipe off, try playing Pictionary. People draw some kind of concept and everyone else tries to guess what they have drawn. The person that guesses takes the next turn.
There are those Positive Affirmation Cards that you can buy or make your own. Each person could pick a card and talk about how that card relates to them.
Put pieces of paper in a hat with different sentences on them leaving a blank where the person can fill in the word.
Ex: When I get angry....
I get frightened when....
I hope this has helped.

Mental health court in Florida?

Mental health court in Florida? My boyfriend was charged with a misdemeanor battery. They are making him go to mental health court? What is mental health court? Can they make you go into treatment for mental health? How does it work?

Answer by ~Heartless~
It means that he has been diagnosed with a mental illness in the past.
Mental health courts are for those people who have a mental illness and are charged with nonviolent or misdemeanor crimes...trying to keep them out of "regular" court because they have illness and are "special".
Yes, it is specifically to form a treatment plan for the offender, in order to keep them out of jail.
Sometimes mentally ill people need special treatment because they go nuts off their meds and it's not their fault...so the MHC tries to help.
If they don't comply though, and keep on meds and doctor visits and social services and whatever else is in their case plan ordered by the judge.....they go to jail like the rest of us.

what does this article mean?

what does this article mean?WASHINGTON - The House voted Wednesday to require equal health insurance coverage for mental and physical illnesses when policies cover both.

The 268-148 roll call was cheered by advocates who have been fighting more than a decade for what has come to be called mental health parity.

Supporters said the measure would help end the stigma of mental illness and create greater access for people needing mental health and addiction treatment.

Opponents warned it could drive up health care costs and force some employers to drop insurance coverage.

The "Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007" was named for the late Minnesota Democratic senator who championed the issue for years and who was killed in a 2002 plane crash.

"It's a historic step," said the late senator's son, David, 42. "It's a civil rights bill for people with mental illnesses and chemical addiction. It forces insurance companies to treat them as they treat others."

Forty-seven Republicans
joined 221 Democrats in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted against it.

The House vote sets the stage for talks with the Senate, which passed a narrower version of the bill last September with support from business and insurance groups.

The White House said it favors the Senate bill because it addresses the need to treat mental illnesses with the same urgency as physical illnesses but wouldn't significantly raise health care costs.

The House bill was sponsored by Reps. Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., who has battled depression, alcoholism and drug abuse, and Jim Ramstad, R-Minn., a recovering alcoholic who is Kennedy's Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.

"It's about opening up the doors and ending the shadow of discrimination against the mentally ill," said Kennedy.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, a longtime mental health advocate, said the bill would help erase the stigma of mental illness that prevents many people from seeking treatment.

The Senate bill was sponsored
The Senate bill was a compromise reached after negotiations with businesses, the insurance industry and mental health advocates. Business and insurance groups had fought previous versions, arguing the proposals would drive up insurance costs.

Answer by Jane S
It means that mental illness would now have to be treated like any other illness. For example some insurance carriers will not cover any mental health related issues. Some limit the amount of care you can get for mental health issues. This changes that. Now mental health issues are treated the same as other health issues.

Want to study Associate Degree in Mental Health?

Want to study Associate Degree in Mental Health?I am high school graduate and passed two years college. I want to study Associate Degree in Mental Health at Community College in USA. I searched in Google but could not find any college. Anyone know the college please inform me the URL.

Thanks.

Answer by Capt Janeway
Mostly such degrees are part of a nursing degree, so you would be doing and associates degree in nursing, ADN. However, there are a few colleges that do specialize in mental health at the associate degree level. However, there few at the community college level.

You can check out
University of Maine at Augusta that offers an Associate of Science in mental health
http://www.uma.edu/catalog-ashumanservices.html

Pierce College have a specialization in mental health, just scroll down their page:
http://www.pierce.ctc.edu/proftech/ssmh/courses.php

Columbus State Community College
http://www.cscc.edu/programs/descriptions/mhcr.htm

Richland Community College, but theirs is essentially part of a nursing degree
http://www.richland.edu/programs/nurs

Try this search string in Google and go through the offerings:
+"Associate " +"Mental Health" +"Community College" site:.edu

Hope this helps!

Military Members and Mental Health Care?

Military Members and Mental Health Care?I am working research paper, and my topic is military members and mental health. I'm trying to find out what psychiatric benefits active military members receive. Can anyone that is in the military (or know someone who is) please give me some ideas on how to find out this information. I have found plenty on what veterans recieve.
Thank You!

Answer by mich
All military personnel are eligible for mental health assistance through the military base or VA if needed. This includes psychiatric and psychological help. There is one on one counseling and group counseling along with meds. There are mental health hospitals with full inpatient care. Basically, It's just like any other job when you have to go see a psychiatrist or psychologist.

Answer by reconciled one
Military members have access to Military Treatment Facilities which include full mental health. When a MTF is not available, civilian health care is authorized. By using MilitaryOneSource (website), a military member can see a counselor anonymously for up to 6 visits. They also have full access to social workers and chaplains.

I am a retired U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps officer. Mental health benefits are among the medical benefits availale to all active duty service members, dependents(spouses and children) and retired members. You can probably access some information thru each services Surgeon General's offices.

In my experience there can sometimes be a great deal of stigma attached to an active duty person who seeks mental health care...although there should not be. Except in some positions needing a high security clearance, etc. In the Navy and Marine Corps at least service members applying for special programs such as nuclear programs, submarine duty, flight duty, SEALS, etc receive thorough psychiatric screening before being accepted into those programs.

Yet, even once you are in those programs if you have some sort of mental health problem frequently you would probably try to hide it from your command. I know in my 28 years of active duty as I advanced thru the enlisted rates/ranks and then subsequently thru the commissioned ranks I hid my bipolar for a very long time of suffering. Not until my career was nearly done did I seek help....in the work I was doing I probably would have lost my security clearances, and subsequent promotions, if I had sought help earlier. There is no complete privacy of medical records. Commanders have the right to know,

Hope this helps

There is an excellent lead on this in about.com. This should point you in the right direction. In essence, the military maintains that medical care is free to all, including mental health care. However, in recent years, the military has systematically cut staffing and consolidated medical facilities as a cost-saving measure. Recent news attention paid to Walter Reed highlights the issue, but it's really deeper than that. You've really got to dig to get the relevant data, but it's out there:
