Good Gifts For Mental Health Clients?

Good Gifts For Mental Health Clients?I joined the mental health association. They throw a Christmas party every year. They need help making gifts and finding gifts to give to the mental health clients at the Christmas party. I think something like 200 people show up every year. So far I've made 5 stationary sets. Each set comes with 8 papers, 8 envelopes, a pen and a clip board. The stationary is rainbow colors and I printed them off my computer. Any other ideas of what might make good gifts for this event?
These are ADULT clients. And keep in mind that it's mental illness as in Bipolars not people with developemental problems.

Can a former mental health patient work in the psychiatric field?

Can a former mental health patient work in the psychiatric field?I was treated for mental health issues for years as a child/adolescent but have been in recovery and mental stability for over five years now. I recently applied to attend college and was interested in earning my AA degree in Psychology to become a Psychiatric Technician, working with kids like myself when I was young. I'm hoping my past treatment will not be a problem when it comes time to get a job, so I want to know if it will disqualify me.

Answer by thomas p
You should not have problems under the facts of your case. You would be measuring rather than treating the patients' skills and deviations from the so-called norm.

Answer by Subliminal Divinity
Watch Patch Adams... good movie.. I don't know if it is realistic... says it is based on a true story...

Answer by Derek
Of course you can, recovering addicts often work with drug addicts trying to get clean. It's the same situation with gang members. I mean who knows mental illness beter than the one who experienced it right?

Answer by .
You will have the added benefits of understanding, compassion, sympathy and a whole host of positives. There is one thing to do: ask a counselor or mental health specialist or psych if this can be done, or if there would be any interference. Actually, go and get an application for a future position you want and see what it requests and take it from there. Peace.

Answer by Bradley P
It shouldn't be an issue really. As long as you're in recovery and stable on your program, it's all good. The only concern I'd worry about is if there were any legal or police issues when you were ill--since you want to work with children, the *Legal* record might come up if you have one.

Otherwise, if you're well, you're well. ^__^ And it's a poorly-kept secret in the field that a lot of folks in counseling and therapy have had *prior issues*. Some of this could arguably be a de facto job requirement--some degree of empathy with or understanding of the client's life on the other side of the professional "fence". As long as you're well and have *been well* for years and keep on *staying well*, it won't be an issue.

That's just been my experience, as a client who nearly finished his training as an assistant/support group leader of sorts. What you're doing isn't just possible, it's actually somewhat *common and ordinary*. You're not alone.

What prison in the United States provides the best mental health services to prisoners?

What prison in the United States provides the best mental health services to prisoners?Hi,
I am doing a "proposal" that is aim at targeting the deficiencies that prisons across the United States suffered, especially the State of California. In this proposal, I have to provide details of the common problems that affect prisoners inside prison who suffer from mental health problems. This proposal will consider the economic crisis that limits the government of California from providing better mental health treatment inside prison.

So, which of the 50 states provides better mental health treatment to prisoners, excluding the State of California? Mmm, perhaps cost or something like that.

Thank You!

Answer by gerry mac
Not so much an answer but an observation, my dear pal was on death row in San Quentin and he often wrote about how so many guys became so mentally ill that they were no longer fit for execution. Sadly this proved to be true when he took his own life in June this year, says it all for me. Peace

What makes members of the Church of Scientology mental health experts?

What makes members of the Church of Scientology mental health experts?I remember Tom Cruise telling Matt Lauer, "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do!" Oh, really? Are we supposed to believe that he spent hours studying psychiatry texts and journals while he wasn't filming movies or jumping on Oprah's couch? Also, there was a feature on "48 Hours" about a young schizophrenic man who killed his mother while he was in a psychotic state. His parents were Scientologists who didn't believe that he needed meds or counseling, and for that reason, they didn't get him the help he so desperately needed and now his mother is dead as a result.

Answer by butch
They're not, it's just their opinions. It has been proven that if medical treatment is withheld something terrible is waiting to happen.

Answer by chrstnwrtr
I don't know but denying someone medication because of a mental health conditition is just wrong. Some people do need the stuff. I agree that our society is overly medicated but some people do need it.

Heck, Brooke Shields said that her life is much better with the meds after Tom Cruise said something about her. Now what happens if their kid Suri develops a severe case of depression? Are they going to tell her it's "all in her head" and just have her take vitamins instead? That can have fatal consequences.

I was diagnosed with depression when I was a sophomore in college. However, prior to that, I suffered from panic and anxiety attacks and took medication previously. Without my meds, I would not be able to function and I would most likely be laying in bed crying my eyes out...ALL DAY.

Psychiatry is not a quack science; in people who suffer from depression, it is said that they suffer from a chemical imbalance in the brain caused by environmental factors as well as genetics (which is where I got my depression from). Anti-depressants such as Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, etc. are taken to help to balance the imbalance in the brain. Vitamins are not scientifically proven to do this (the exception being Omega fish oil tablets) other than give the body its daily dose of nutrients.

The very idea of denying someone psychiatric medication such as that young man who killed his mother for weird reasons is wrong. What if someone is so depressed to the point of being suicidal? How are vitamins going to help them?

Answer by bottles
I remember about 28 years ago, when scientology was new on the scene. A sub-group of my friends joined. They became the most obnoxious people I've ever met. Then, after experiencing many problems, they decided, one by one, to quit. The local 'scientology leaders' tried to hold them against their will. Others were out-right kidnapped. After all was said and done, my friends were too scared to prosecute. They had received threats that were very clear about what would happen to their families if they did. Scientology is a CULT. An evil cult that promotes SELF. Anything but God. They lie to confuse their followers. I hope that any person considering 'joining' that cult , reads this post. A personal true-life experience.

Childhood Temporary Separation: Long-term Effects of Wartime Evacuation in World War 2 by Rusby, JSM; 287 pages; ISBN-10: 1599426579; ISBN-13: 9781599426570 This study investigates possible links between temporary separation from parents in childhood due to evacuation in World War 2 and later psychological development and adult relationships. The conclusions from an earlier qualitative pilot study had suggested that the developmental outcome of evacuation was perceived by those involved as lying on a continuum, at one extreme the experience was 'life-enhancing' and at the other it had left an 'emotional legacy' depending on an individual's experience. This present lifespan survey using self report questionnaires and involving 900 respondents from the county of Kent confirmed these perceptions and examined whether they were reflected by measures of mental health, marital history and adult attachment. The methodology employed univariate and multivariate analyses, including causal structural models of depression for both sexes, and involved both childhood and life-course mediating variables. In terms of mental health highly significant associations were found for the evacuation experience variables of Age at Evacuation and Care Received with the Incidence of Depression, Clinical Anxiety and Factor 2, Self-criticism, of the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire (Blatt et al., 1976), all in the predicted sense. Females were found to be particularly vulnerable to Clinical ...

why smoking lessens i.q. thinking ability?

why smoking lessens i.q. thinking ability? The poorer mental function seen among alcoholics, many of whom also regularly smoke cigarettes, may be partially due to the long-term effects of nicotine, new research suggests.

"People who are also smokers are at a much higher risk," Dr Jennifer M Glass, of the University of Michigan's Addiction Research Centre, told Reuters Health.

In her study, "cigarette smoking was negatively related to IQ and thinking," she said.

This finding may seem counter-intuitive, since many smokers attest to feeling more alert and focused after smoking.

Indeed, research shows that improved mental functioning is one of the immediate effects of nicotine exposure.

Chronic smoking, however, is known to have the opposite effect.

Studies show that up to 87 per cent of alcoholics smoke cigarettes, compared to less than 30 per cent of the general United States population.

Yet, few studies have looked into cigarette smoking as a factor that might explain the cognitive deficits reported among alcoholics.

To investigate that association, Dr Glass and her colleagues examined brain function among 172 men from the same community, including 103 men who abused alcohol.

The team found that men with higher scores on the lifetime alcohol problems scale (LAPS) and those who reported a higher number of pack-years of smoking (that is, packs of cigarettes smoked per day times number of years) both had lower IQ scores and lower scores on a test of global proficiency.

The proficiency test took into account the speed and accuracy with which the men were able to perform a battery of tests including those that measured short-term memory, verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning.

Upon further investigation, the researchers found that smoking predicted poorer global proficiency even more strongly than alcoholism did. Their findings were published online before publication in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Smoking also appeared to be independently associated with weaker verbal and visual-spatial reasoning, the study indicates.

Thus, though smoking did not account for all of the decreased precognitive functioning observed among the alcohol abusers, it did seem to account for some of the effects, the report indicates.

The reason for the observed associations is unknown, and the researchers did not investigate the "cause and effect story," Dr Glass said, but she speculated that the diminished cognitive ability among smokers may be partly due to some mechanism involving a restricted flow of blood and oxygen to the brain.

Based on the current report, Dr Glass said, "if you need another reason to quit smoking, it's a good potential one to add to the list."

Prior medication use?

Prior medication use?Let's go say someone I know was on medication for 2-3 weeks for a minor mental health issue. This was back in August/September of 2009. They used it for, like I said, 2-3 weeks and didn't need it anymore. He even contacted his doctor about not needing it anymore. And if he still needed medication after using it all, the doctor would have to see him again and prescribe him medication for a longer time period, but this was never needed.

Now let's jump ahead to March of 2011. It has been over a year and a half since they used the medication. The issue was so minor that is really wasn't a problem at all. It was literally just a one time thing that came out of nowhere.

He ships out at the end of March.

Since this person has been off of meds, and BARELY used any in the first place, for so long can it affect them later on?

I know the military has some kind of rule about medication, and how long you have been on and off it. He is in the Air Force, btw.

So is there any problems? Obviously he is already in and did MEPS and has been in DEP since October of 2010.

I keep on reading about the military NOT checking medical records. Since over 50K go through basic each year, and it is a ridiculous process to go through so many medical records.

Can something so minor hurt him later on? And let's just assume he doesn't show any symptoms in basic. Which he probably wont/.
anxiety that lasted for a short period of time and hasn't come back for OVER a year and a half.

Answer by Rich
if it was given to him by a PhD or anyone licensed to prescribe that drug and it was on his medical record and he did not try to hide it he will be ok. Key point everything had to be legal.

Answer by hmmmmm
I am sure he will be fine. However if he or she was to try to use the issue later as coming from being in the military, that will be a different story. Because then they will find it. If he has docs to prove he no longer needed it (the meds) he should just keep those docs. I hope all is well for him and he can make a great career out of this.

Answer by Craziness!
Howdy.

What was the mental health issue? I mean there are so many different possibilities. You probably wont know if there is any problem until it just happens. For example, I had a dog that had a history of massive seizures when he got too excited. My Vet. perscribed him medication that he was to take once daily for only 6 months. After the 6 month duration, I took my Dog back to the Vet. for another check up and I was told the seizures should happen very rarely if at all. Two months later I woke up one morning and my Dog was dead on the couch.

I figured he was probably hit with another Seizure, a fatal one apparently, but that was just my guess.

All you can do is wait and see what happens.

My insurance plan doesn't cover mental health and I need a psychologist, what do I do?

My insurance plan doesn't cover mental health and I need a psychologist, what do I do?Hello,

I asked a question a few days ago in Answers about whether health insurance covers psychologists. I talked with Cigna (My health care provider through Healthy New York, the state's "affordable" insurance plan for the uninsured). They sent me a list of psychologists and after many calls, I was finally able to secure an appointment. Since then, I found out that Healthy New York does not offer coverage for mental health. I have been back and forth on the phone between Healthy NY and Cigna all morning. I'm willing to pay a higher preminum for psychological coverage, but both of them are saying there's nothing that can be done. I really need a psychologist, is there anything I can do? I'll provide details as they're needed.
Ironically enough, since the two people who replied are total douchebags who have nothing better to do with their lives, let me clarify: I was told by Cigna that the two exceptions under which I could get coverage are if I was in a substance abuse program or if I was detoxing. I could drink away my problems. But I know that won't help me. I can think rationally and clearly. That doesn't make me any less deserving of help. If anything, I'm more deserving. And a question to the second poster, why shouldn't I get help? I'm a 27 year old male, otherwise in perfect health, who is facing some emotional problems and needs to talk to a professional. I haven't used my health plan for anything else so far, and I've had it for nearly a year. This is the one time I need it, to justify the amount of money I'm paying into it every month.
Countrygirl, thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it.

Mommy, unfortunately, it's not that easy. I got this plan under Healthy New York, which is meant to be an affordable plan offered by the state to cover the uninsured, whose jobs don't offer health insurance. There are multple plans I can choose from, meaning various HMO's. But this is the policy of Healthy NY. So I'll try to contact these other HMO's but if Healthy NY is only offering the most basic coverage, I don't think I can really do anything.
Mickey,

I manage a liquor store, and unfortunately, as you can probably assume, not a lot of liquor stores have health benefits, LOL.
Thanks everybody, this was very upsetting to me through the day, but seeing your thoughtful and informative responses make me feel better. Thanks so much, it means a lot.
Joules,

Thank you for the phone number, I will call them tomorrow.

Answer by Joe C
Nor should it cover it - they're not going to help you. The vast majority of so-called "mental" problems have to do with personal failing or being the victims of others' cruelty, of which psychologists don't have a clue, and which they probably won't address.

Answer by CountryGirl
There should be several groups in your area (they are everywhere) that work with you based on your income. Start with your local yellow pages. Good luck.

Answer by mommy
wow, that is terrible. Here in Canada I can go see a therapist at the community mental health for free.. I even got my kid into child therapy for free (turned out I was concerned about nothing)... but I didn't have to pay a dime. Don't you have any offices like that where the government pays their wages and it is free to the public (all you have to do is run your problems by an intake worker and they accept or deny you... but they always accept)? Nothing like that?

The other thing I'd suggest is to get better covered and don't tell the company why. Once a company knows they will pay out, they dont' want you to use them, lol. That is what they are there for, but you need to increase your coverage or get a new plan with a different company... you may have to wait 3 months for it to kick in... but don't tell them why you want a premium package... make it sound like you want it just in case..

I don't know if that will help. I heard the states has terrbile health care.. like you even have to pay to get treated in a hospital and stuff!!

Answer by Mickey
Cigna should be separate from Healthy New York and Cigna IS the Mental Health coverage of state plans. So someone is giving you the runaround. However, why do you need a psychologist? The reason I ask that is this: Is it depression? Is it a traumatic experience? Did you have a head injury? In other words, is it something you can see a NEUROpsychologist for. If so, then the standard is that a NEUROpsychologist is NOT mental health, it is covered under Health/Medical because they test to arrive at a MEDICAL (not mental) diagnosis. If Cigna sent you the list then they do cover those psychologists. Stick with it until you get satisfaction. Cigna, like I said, is the mental health network offshoot of medical plans.

***ADDED NOTE:*** - Do you have an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through work? If you do, seek out the EAP Program Coordinator. They can help you. I would say that your last resort is to find someone and set up a Payment Plan with the billing department (as long as you do that and you're paying "something - I think the lowest is $ 10/mo) on your bill then they can't sue you.

Answer by Susanna W
If you search around you will probably find one that will take you on a slidind scale. So say you bring a certain amount of money a month they go by what you make and that is how you are charged. If it gets to bad try a county that you live in and they have people that can assist in your crisis.Hope you know that what ever it is you are going threw that there is nothing that God does not see or hear.Prayer does amazing things for people.

what is the independent and dependent variable?

what is the independent and dependent variable?Hi, I need help with this case study. I'm not sure what are the iv and dv in this study.

Purpose: Stressful life events represent potent risk factors for the development of internalizing symptoms among adolescents. However the mechanisms linking stress to adolescent psychopathology remain inadequately understood. This study examined the role of emotion dysregulation as a mechanism linking stress to changes in internalizing symptoms among adolescents. Methods: This study used a short-term longitudinal design. Stressful life events were assessed in a large diverse sample of adolescents (N = 1065), and emotion dysregulation and symptomatology outcomes were assessed at two subsequent time points. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the role of emotion dysregulation as a mediator of the association between stress and subsequent changes in internalizing symptoms. Results: Emotion dysregulation mediated the relationship between stressful life events and changes in internalizing symptoms over time. Sobel's test indicated a significant indirect effect of stressful life events on subsequent symptoms of depression (z = 5.05, p < .001) and anxiety (z = 4.95, p < .001) through emotion dysregulation. Conclusions: Stressful life events appear to disrupt the adaptive processing of emotion among adolescents. Emotion dysregulation represents an intrapersonal mechanism linking stress to poor mental health outcomes. The implications for preventive interventions are discussed.

Thanks!

Answer by Julia
stressful life events = independent variable
internalizing symptoms = dependent variable

Just remember DRY MIX; re
Dependent Responsive Y-Axis
Manipulative Independent X-Axis

The "changes" in internalizing symptoms over time are "dependent" on the stressful life events, which are independently controlled.

how do I know whether I am suffering PTSD? I always feel unreal and unworthy and have constant panic attacks?

how do I know whether I am suffering PTSD? I always feel unreal and unworthy and have constant panic attacks?I was diagnosed with major depression in 2000 and borderline personality disorder but several therapists have said they don't think I have this disorder. Therapy has been sporadic due to therapists moving on or not being able to afford it privately. Late last yr I was given public funding to see a private psychologist & just as I am making progress they are cutting that too possibly due to a crisis nurse who had forced me to go to public hospital to be rehydrated and told a nurse private information about me and defamated my character in front of other nurses and the public. They are now withholding my notes so i dont have proof and are treating me with ongoing disrepsect. In dec I became suicidal and rang up a crisis hotline asking for help, the police came, spoke to my local crisis team and then mocked me, leaving with the knowledge I was highly suicidal and consequently acted, waking up in ED they just chucked me in a wheelchair as my left foot was totally numb and left me in the ed waiting area. I called an ambulance then next night and was left for over 6hrs b4 being discharged to my GP. They ordered me off the premises while I was trying to organise a lift home, then up at the top hospital a security guard came up and asked me to leave. I was not doing anything dispruptive, just waiting for the duty manager who had said she would be down to see me and didn't bother phoning me to tell me she wasn't coming down then asked again to my humiliation to leave by a security officer. I now get really shaky, sweaty and on edge every time I have an appointment I have to go to at that hospital. Last time I took a health advocate with me. I'm wondering if I am suffering PTSD as just the thought of an upcoming appointment there is bringing on the same symptoms. I have no support from my community mental health team except a ph call from the keyworker I was assigned once a week which never lasts more than 2mins max. I feel like I am living on the edge all the time, and that my father got away with physically, verbally emotionally and psychologically abusing me and one of my brothers as well as violently abusing my Mum throughout my childhood and young adulthood. I just feel soooo lost and am always on the verge of tears, and feel like no-one really cares.:O( I also have a history of being bullied by my family, then my workmates now my mental health team and they are telling me I have had heaps of mental health input over the years which is not true, and was totally invalidated when in my latest crisis the crisis nurse totally negated my physical injuries got a 2nd degree burn to my foot in hospital (DRS fault!), and other foot totally numb from 4th dec, 2009 (which were only recent ones) citing that others cope.....and that all I do is complain..... because when I was new to the service I made a complaint about the psychologist from the local mental health team as she called me a coward, told me all her own problems and told me I was stupid for crying over having to put my 16yr old cat down, and did not tell me I had borderline personality disorder which was told to me during a mediation.......I have had enough of feeling like I am worthless and walking around and round in circles...........HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer by Mary
I cannot tell from your description if it sounds like PTSD. I'm sorry you are having a hard time with the nursing and hospital care. Depression and anxiety disorders can have similar symptoms. I have PTSD. My most noticeable symptoms that differ from depression are flashbacks and full on panic and terror when I am triggered.

Example: Someone held me down by the face while trying to choke me more than 20 years ago. Now, I can't go to the dentist without feeling like my life is in immediate danger. There is an auto response I get that turns on all my adrenaline. My brain is basically screaming to run and fight or I will die, even though the rational side of my brain is working just fine. I know I am not in danger, yet the reaction continues. I cannot stop the reaction, it just happens and is beyond my control.

When I get a flashback, I physically react exactly like I did when someone attacked me. I just don't realize I am doing it until it is over. There is no decision making process, it is like my body is on auto-pilot. It is very strange and usually embarrassing.

Basically, I have had to learn to live with the symptoms. I've been to therapy and I've been on medication. They both help to an extent, but it comes down to being able to live with and work around my own symptoms. I have to be sedated for a couple of things in order to make it through it, such as dentist visits. I've been dealing with it for well over half my life, so I might as well just work with it. There is no cure, and I am not going to sit around letting my life pass me by waiting for one. The doctors and nurses can only do so much. If it is depression or an anxiety disorder does not really matter much in the long term, the treatments and medications are pretty much the same.

I guess what I am saying is that it is you that has to take control of the situation. No doctor or therapist can fix it for you, they can only help you along the path of you learning to live with your disorder. Take on the responsibility of it and you will find a way to feel better a lot faster.

What happens in the US if you have issues with your mental health, but yet do not have the money to hospital?

What happens in the US if you have issues with your mental health, but yet do not have the money to hospital?I'm just curious because I'm from the UK. I have private health care plan and stuff because of the amount of money my parents have, but I always feel reassured that if I become sick and have no money there always will be a place for me in the NHS system. So that was the context of my question and these are the details relating to the question. What does the US health department do in the small selection cases in which someone is a danger to the public or themselves and yet does not have the relevant fiscal resources to fund their care, whether insured or not.

Thanks in advance.

Answer by The Cat and Whistle
46million US citizens have no healthcare at all!

Maybe they all go crazy and do drive by shootings lol?

The poor and disenfranchised turn to drugs and alcohol, generally, if they don't end up in jail or dead.

Answer by Nikolas of Caspia
depending on your age, finances, eligibility for programs and location , they would recieve some and sometimes complete treatment ,,but for the majority of cases they recieve little to none ,,

Answer by Donna
There are numerous free or low cost clinics as well as state hospitals for those who cannot afford treatment. I have used the free clinics several times. Most large cities have a charity hospital. Unfortunately, if there are no beds available some mentally ill patients can spend a day or more waiting in a section of the emergency room to get help......

Answer by Rebecca Morgan
75% of the homeless population are mentally ill..... in the US if you are not a threat to someone else then they just let them live off the street and eat out of trashcans.......... they can go to the emergency room for crisis care but then they are released back to the street....

Mental Health: mental health assessment with a psychologist?

mental health assessment with a psychologist? My doctor has referred me to a psychologist for a mental health assessment and I'm just wondering what to expect at this appointment? I have had symptoms of depression for quite some time and have a hard time trusting and communicating with loved ones. What exactly does a psychologist do?

Answer by EJ
well... to concentrate something else which will makes you and feel you happily... don't be alone spend times with your family and friends...

Answer by pygonza
They will have you fill out a bunch of forms and give you a bunch of stuff about confidentiality to read and sign. They will likely do an intake and ask you a bunch of questions about you, your family, and your childhood. They might have you do a psychological test with pencil and paper. Then they might make recommendations for counseling.

Answer by kelliep331
you need to be totally honest with your psych. even if they ask you a personal question you're not comfortable with. in your best interest, answer it as well as you can.

baby just chill and try to relax. try to enjoy the company of ur loved ones u do not know what you are loosing. baby just try to spend ur time with ur loved ones i think u will definitely come out with ur depression
all the best

Answer by Tony T
An assessment is fairly straight forward. The purpose is to find out about you and what factors might be causing your symptoms of depression. This will usually include an interview with the psychologist. It involves asking about your personal history, such as your family, relationships and a sense of your basic perspective on your life. The purpose is to get to understand you on a deep level. There maybe some tests. Most likely it would include a personality test, such as the MMPI, which is a true /false test of some statements. Then the psychologist may suggest some therapy to help you with any identified issues. The best approach is to understand this person is there for you and wants to help. The more open you are with them the easier it will be to overcome the symptoms of depression.

Answer by alykate
You need to stop worrying about when you are older. Live today, for now, this moment, and set yourself up so that when you are older you won't be stressed and life will be comfortable. Learn ways of dealing with these feelings so if they ever do get strong you will know how to recognise and deal with them. Smile:)

Answer by Hopefully Helpful
Hopefully you will be stronger at you get older. Each day it is important to keep in mind what we need to do so we can feel better. As long as we have a plan, we will grow stronger. Figure out what is making you feel depressed so you can take steps to help yourself feel better. If your suicidal thoughts get in the way of you being able to do your daily routine, it would be a good idea to get professional help. Good Luck in the future.

Don't you think this brutally honest poem my mom recently wrote "tells it like it is"?Why Still Such A Stigma?

"Story Of The Mentally Ill":

This is a story of the mentally ill
Stuck away in hospitals against their will
Beaten and abused
Lost and confused
Forsaken by family, God, and man
Trying to survive as best as they can
Trying to live week to week
Tears in their eyes-afraid to speak
Treated mean by doctors, nurses, and patients they meet
Worse than a homeless person on the street
Shunned by friends and family
They roam these halls lost and lonely
Waiting for a kind word from staff or family
I know because it happened to me
All they do is over medicate
You take a pill for stress and insanity
I know because it happened to me
It doesn't matter if you have wealth
It doesn't matter if you have bad health
Rich or poor is the same you see
All you get is a look of pity
Shunned by friends and family who just don't care
When all you need is for them to be there
This is your fate if you are labeled crazy
I know because it happened to me
All of this happened to me-it's true
When you are labeled crazy

by Lora's mom (whom LORA got every speck of her talent from*) September 09

*** Being mentally ill does not mean that you can't be both intelligent and extremely talented-GIFTED-even an GENIUS! Some of the most creatively gifted "GENIUS" people alive on this planet are somewhat insane! I saw the bruises on my mom's frail body (& I later read her entire journal). Both my mother's "sisters" had the NERVE to say to my mother (and to me) that my mother threw herself against a wall! (That isn't what happened.) I handed over to the people who investigate these types of things the entire contents of the journal my mom kept when she was recently locked up in McLean's mental hospital in Ma. There is still "surprisingly" a terrible, terrible STIGMA on mental illness. In case anybody out there reading this is "worried" that Lora has somehow "betrayed" her mother-I have not betrayed my mom in any way. My mom asked me to put her poem out in cyberspace. ***Neither Lora nor her mother give one flying f what the rest of the "so called" family thinks or wants kept "quiet"..... "God Forbid You Ever Had To Walk A Mile In Her Shoes ... (EVERLAST) *My "aunt" L (who USED to be my good friend but SADLY turned into another "auntie" M") had the AUDACITY to say to my mother (in response to my mother's incredible poem called "STORY OF THE MENTALLY ILL") "Mental hospitals are not like that, E". You have NEVER been "locked up" in a mental hospital, L! (Sarcasm intended.) Who does anybody think that they are telling anybody else what they have or have not suffered in this life? Lora has NEVER been in either jail or a mental hospital (for any length of time) but would Lora ever say to a human being who had been in one of those places (for any length of time) "Those places are not like that"? How could my aunt L say that to my poor mother? It blows my mind-the AUDACITY of too many people on this planet! (Sarcasm Intended-anger suppressed-to avoid my own incarceration!)

Answer by Etter L
I like it. Your mom is a true poet. It does tell it like it is.

Answer by Iano The Mighty
This poem indeed displays a "speck of talent" - emphasis on the word "speck". However, more than that is needed to write a well-crafted poem - this isn't it.

Answer by Amanda
You know....there are people out there who do care. No amount of words set in art can really "tell it like it is" Those who don't walk in your mom's shoes can't ever understand but there are people out there who do care...who care to show compassion and support but we don't always know how.

Thank you for sharing your mom's poem.

Mental Health: Should I go for Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Counseling?

Should I go for Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Counseling?I'm in the process of looking at graduate programs and my first choice was Mental Health Counseling. However, after finding out about the the requirements to become licensed, about the politics in this field, about the job prospects (everyone wants an LCSW) and the pay, I'm starting to feel as though it might not be worth my time, energy, and money. After doing research on the field of Occupational Therapy, it seems to me that it would make more sense for me to pursue this field.

I know that any field I pursue, I want to be in doing something that is meaningful and that will make a positive impact on the lives of others. I want to pursue a career that fits well with my personality, with what I like, and a career that is in demand and pays well. I want to pragmatic in my choices.

Can anyone give me any advice on what choice of career would be better? Thanks!

Answer by spoiledbabi08
If you decide to do Occupational Therapy, you will still be able to work with the Mentally Ill, so you might want to seriously consider it if you are having some doubts. Occupational Therapists are able to help all kinds of people, with all sorts of problems, to be able to do everyday things, so if that's the kind of thing you want to be able to do OT is a great choice.

I can't tell you which would be better for you, because I don't know. But I do know that no matter which you choose, you will be helping people that really need it, which is a great feeling.

If you want to know anything else about OT, just e-mail me, my sister has CP, and I have personally been to an OT myself. I am also an Occupational Therapy major in college right now. = )

Mental Health: lost touch with many friends online someone help !?

lost touch with many friends online someone help !?What can you do if you lost a lot of friends online?

ive used this mental health forum on yahoo answers for 3 / 4 years now, its been a great medium to express my life story, situations and ask questions regarding it.

ive had a lot '' a lot '' of people reach out to me ...i used to message them back, built up a close rapor with many.....alot of people reaching out , wanting to befriend me.

i added many to my yahoo messenger.

i found it hard to keep communication going because of my very low moods, very low self esteem, clingyness......difficulty in reaching out....not good social skills.......difficulty in being confident....acting intense , eager for friendship......needy...too intense etc.

i have bpd so making and holding onto relationships is very difficult.

the depressing thing is i cant remember half of who used to message me.....but they were good people.........the people on yahoo messenger havent been online for a very long time and just seemed to taper off contact with me....or lose interest..

some i let slip by because of my social problems, very low self worth...and mood dips.....and not answering their messages.......which i extremely regret..

i cant remember half their emails as they were in old yahoo answer accounts that have been suspended...

the ones on messenger , ive left messages expressing my sadness at not hearing from them - i get no reply.

i miss all my old internet friends who i used to message and correspond with.

i feel paranoid like they were told to stop getting in touch with me..

there was a girl in kansas , a girl in ontario canada ....others etc.

on the few times ive found an email of a person i could remember, and emailed them.......they never got back intouch....nothing.

how can i handle this rejection, disappointment ? getting no response from messaging them ?

i feel angry sat here and very depressed.

Answer by alyanna99
Well, you've found me again and now that I'm through the worst, I'm here to be supportive. Everyone has their own set of problems and I wouldn't look at it as a reflection of you, rather everyone needs to take care of their own well being first, before they can reach out to help and be beneficial to others. People come and go throughout our lives, that's just the nature of things, especially online. That's why it is important to find a friend that lives near you so that you can communicate with someone in the flesh and hear the intonations in their voice and see the expressions on their face. You can get type-written support from a computer, but it does not replace a warm body near you. I think what you struggle with is that you are so focused on your problems that you project an unhealthy aura when you are in public. Being on a computer all day everyday is not going to help you in the long run. You may get some great advice and learn something new, but you have this barrier in front of you that is hampering your social skills. People follow your questions and responses because you ARE interesting and you have some very profound ideas. You need to share those with people in real life and not just type away at a screen. Join a book club at your local bookstore - it is inexpensive (just the cost of the book) and you are likely to meet some great women with common interests. Hope this helps.

I challenge the Mental Health Community to find the answer to TI targeting?

I challenge the Mental Health Community to find the answer to TI targeting? For details, enter (Targeted Individual, TI) into your Yahoo ANSWER 'Search for question'.

Can certain effects claimed by many 100s of TIs around the world be detected, measured, and recorded. I believe they can be. Don't we, as concerned citizens of America and of the world, have an obligaton to find out the truth concerning claims made by so many human beings, TIs? I think that we do. If it is true what TIs claim about targeted effects they suffer, then don't we have a moral obligation to determine the truth of the matter and to have those that perpetrate such acts, appropriately punished? I think so. Then I challenge the mental health community to take the first step and conduct scientific based sleep studies on a group of TIs. Based upon my own research, I am confident that if carefully orchestrated, a sleep study would expose certain externaly projected energy fields that are common to most TI's, affecting both body and mind, remotely, from a far.
I am not alone in my observation of the TI situation.

Other professionals are beginning to wake up and realize that the "commonality" between so many TIs worldwide is inconsistent with mental illness. I have personally conducted experiments using high-gain microphones and ultrasonic transducers to test TI claims. Data suggest that some form of pulsed energy field is "tuned into" the TI, selectively, and remotely. Transducers and oscilloscope displays don't lie. The mental health community, MHC, needs to stop ignoring these TIs and help them determine what the energy fields are and what the source is behind them. Or, maybe MHC is simply afraid to interfere with human experiments in progress.

Is it possible to prepare for depression to return and maybe help prevent it?

Is it possible to prepare for depression to return and maybe help prevent it?Hi. I've been treated for depression for 3 years and with the help of meds, finally am in remission.
But last month, my hubby lost his job. And we will relocate for his new one. From a big city and nice home that I love to a small, cruddy town within an hour of my family who make me feel awful about myself.
I want to preserve my mental health during this transition and am not sure the best way to go about it. For now, my AD has been upped and I've added an anxiety pill at my docs advice, but moving will be rough.
Anyone face a tough situation and maintain your sanity? Please advise.
Thanks!

How To Prevent A Relapse from depression,While recovering?

Take it one day at a time.
Don't expect too much too soon.
Set realistic, doable daily goals.
Take part in activities that make you feel better.
Do not underestimate the power of laughter. It's hard to feel depressed when you're laughing.
Seek out people who are supportive and helpful.
Stick to your treatment plan; for example, take your medication as prescribed and keep your psychotherapy appointments.

People at risk for depression, and those who are depressed, should avoid :
Alcohol and drugs.
Negative situations and judgemental or demanding people who bring one down.
Isolation. Don't withdraw from others, no matter how tempting.Learn the art of meditation, which can clear the mind of useless thoughts and foster inner calm. There are many self-help tapes and books on meditation and other relaxation and distraction techniques, such as creative visualization or guided imagery.

Answer by Kat C
How come you're not combining your medication with regular therapy? Developing a relationship with a therapist really is the only way to cope effectively with your depression. It's easy to take medicine and ignore when the negative emotions come up but it's far from permanent. A great therapist will give you skills to actively cope with the move and all the anxieties and stresses that will come about from it. Ask your doctor for a referral so you can start seeing someone, particularly a psychiatrist so that your medication can be monitored more closely and adjusted as soon as you need it to be.

However, since you already are aware of what triggers your depression, you can use that to be your guide as to when to give yourself a break from all that is going on so you can recharge yourself and find some inner peace. It's difficult to do that when you're going to a place you don't want to be but that's why it's important to find someone who will provide the stable environment you need right now in order to get through this with considerably less difficulty.

Good luck! Change is hard but you've made it through 3 years of what was already the toughest part -- getting better.

Have the Foxconn suicides been blown out of proportion by the Chinese media?

Have the Foxconn suicides been blown out of proportion by the Chinese media?10 suicides and 2 attempted suicides in the last 5 months out of 300,000 employers, comparing with China's suicide rate of 19.3 for men and 11.5 (world health organisation figures 2006) women per 100,000 people per are the likes of China daily and xinhuanet views bias as the owner is Taiwan billionaire working on China soil?

http://www.who.int/mental_health/media/chinzhongk.pdf

Answer by We never left!
Yes. The incidents have been blown out of proportion due to Foxconn's association with Taiwan. The Mainland Chinese media wishes to vilify the Taiwanese in order to justify their own government's efforts to "save our lost and suffering Taiwan-based Chinese from further influences of the Western world."

Must be that those missiles they have pointed at Taiwan are so good that they only target "Western influences" (e.g. the military and any key industries) and perhaps any pockets of "subversive" aboriginal culture, while not intended to pose any threat to their "Chinese brothers" here in Taiwan. Wow... I didn't know China had such highly advanced and discretionary technology! I smell Nazism in their underlying desire for racial purity and supremacy. Don't you?

Isn't it a bit odd that when there is finger pointing to be done by the Chinese media, Mr. Guo is "from Taiwan"... but, when it suits their purposes, the same media declares that Taiwan is part of China? Wouldn't that mean that they should have referred to Mr. Guo as simply being Chinese instead? Based on this disrespectful and disproportionately unfair treatment by the PRC, Mr. Guo should simply pull up the stakes of his company, and move his business to Vietnam or India or some other equally profitable place that would receive him well and treat him much better.

Here's a good report about the media blowing this out of proportion:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/foremski/media-gets-its-facts-wrong-working-at-foxconn-significantly-cuts-suicide-risk/1356

Answer by Ardis
From the point of view of a foreigner who has been living in China for 10 years, I think I have to say something.

Don't relate everything to Taiwan issue. Yes, Taiwan issue is a big headache to China government. But Foxconn suicides are horrible facts. If you know what really happens in Foxconn, a so-called Forture 500 company, you will never see it in political aspect. This is all about humanity. Foxconn means low pay and endless overtime to many workers. And the harsh rules and regulations of the company deprive many human rights. Another example you may not know is that Huawei suicides a few years ago. It was a hot topic at that time, too. And Huawei is not a Taiwan company, but a mainland company. So the media exposure does not have to relate to political intent.

Another thing I have to mention is that nearly all Taiwan companies do not have a good reputation in China mainland. They do not offer reasonable pay to workers and positions of senior executives are only available for Taiwanese.

Think more about humanity, not politics.

Answer by coolz
oh yes, that's why ccp loves contradictions. ccp believes in such fairy tales that taiwan will return to china, pardon me, i mean china will take taiwan...by use of force, and that they will both live happily ever after. then again, when something bad happens to local people in china, they immediately spring to life and have better pointed fingers to write their bias news under the ccp watch of course.

Don't relate everything to Taiwan issue. Yes, china's child labor, child stabbings, lead poisoning, melamine milk, prostitution, drugs, and piracy issue are a big headache to China government yet they don't do anything about it. But suicides are horrible facts. If you know what really happens in a local china company making fake shoes or fake iphones, may not be a so-called Fortune 500 company, you will never see it in political aspect. This is all about humanity. fake shoe and fake iphone company means low pay and endless overtime to many workers. and the harsh rules and regulations of the company deprive many human rights. Another example you may not know is that Huawei suicides a few years ago. It was a hot topic at that time, too. And Huawei is not a Taiwan company, but a mainland company. So the media exposure does not have to relate to political intent. and consider that news and media in mainland are monitored under ccp (pro and loyalist), so there is no fair coverage.

Another thing I have to mention is that nearly all mainland companies do not have a good reputation in their own country. they do not offer reasonable pay to workers and positions of senior executives are only available for family members.

Hi,I did the following:

The Creative Process and Mental Health

Two of America's most beloved writers led a discussion on a difficult issue confronting millions: depression and mental health. William Styron, author of Darkness Visible: A Memoir of Madness, and Art Buchwald, author of We'll Laugh Again, have both battled depression and shared their personal stories as well as explored ways the media can help overcome the taboos of mental illness. This is the inaugural event of the Mental Health Media Partnership, a new project of the Annenberg Schools at USC and Pennsylvania and the National Mental Health Campaign.

Why Mental Health Court?

Why Mental Health Court? From what I understand from a US dept of Justice article Mental health court is voluntary, but the actual details of the programs vary state by state, even county by county. Mental health court (according tot he article) is for people that are likely to repeat offenses, because of obvious need for mental help.
Now here is the question... I am on probation, non reporting over a traffic violation (not having insurance). I was not on any drugs or drinking at the time. This is the first time I have EVER been in trouble at age 25, and a mother of 3, btw. I went to court over this, and was put on probation. I peed clean initially and was put on non reporting... fast forward... another drug test, still peed clean, BUT the lines were very faint for pot and benzos(no idea what they are?). Impossible, for anything to show up, except maybe prenatals(I am pregnant), I don't do anything, I think their tests are flawed... well the PO kept harassing me that I was doing these things, even though I showed clean, and I finally got sick of it and yelled at her to take me to the hospital to get me retested (after her harassing me for an hour) and she referred me to mental health court... and now I am being forced. I am not as concerned about the actual councilling as the meds they may try to put me on, being pregnant, and as far as just about everyone I know is and I am concerned a pretty "normal" person. I am a stay at home mom/homemaker, have always been, as an adult. Should I contact a lawyer? I am not at risk for "repeating" my offense, because I don't have a car, and no access to one, and I am going to to get all legal, as soon as my suspension is up, and buy a car, so they cant do this crap to me again. I know they hear this stuff all the time, but is there any way I can convince them that they should use their "services" for someone in more need of them than I?
I understand the need for mental health services in a community, and even recommendations of the court for them, hell, even forced(in some cases), but I have no way of getting back and forth, I am walking 5 miles each way to OB appts. as is. I think (maybe sounds like I am a nut now :) ) that it is because they want me to be in the "system" longer, because it is a small town, with small town politics, and where I yelled at the PO, but Christ, they kept accusing me of doing something I don't even have a clue what it is, and pot, which I haven't smoked since having kids! What am I supposed to do? Say yes I did something(that I didn't do) and go to jail, just to make them happy?

What to do, what to do?

Department of Mental Health Budget Hearing FY 2011

April 26, 2010 Judith Sandalow testified in support of the Department of Mental Health's proposed budget, including a new initiative, the Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Project. The executive director of Children's Law Center was careful to point out that her support of the budget does not signal satisfaction with the state of children's mental health services in DC, which is still broken and in need of more funding.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Day Event at Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square on May 2009

On May 7, 2009, across the country, Native communities acknowledged "Children's Mental Health Awareness Day". With some Native communities suffering from 8-9 times the national suicide rate average, its a serious topic. In Portland, Oregon, the Native American Rehabilitation Association, Inc. organized a mini powwow in Pioneer Courthouse Square, serving/honoring homeless youth. The event was a project of the Systems of Care program of NARA, Nak-Nu-Wit and was led by the youth leadership of that community program. Nak-Nu-Wit is the recipient of a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Awareness (SAMHSA) systems of care grant to build a culturally competent mental health program that includes the voice and input across the community.

Mental Health: How can Veterans get help with Mental health issues?

How can Veterans get help with Mental health issues?I am amongst thousands of American people suffering from depression. It started a few months after I finished my time in the military. I'm just finding much help through the VA and not only that, but I'm worried if I seek government assistance on getting some help, that it may effect my chances of getting a high security job or law enforcement or a government job in the future. My wife says I can go through the VA for help, but I don't think so, Since one I only did 4 honorable years and two they never mentioned it in TAP class. Also I never had a problem with serious problem with depression in the military that I could file for disability for. I don't have health insurance and the places I've called are asking for a ridiculous amount money just to be seen. I never was in a combat situation and I do not suffer from PTSD. Is there any help out there for veterans that are seeking help as far as mental health goes?

Answer by Cassandra
There are mental health clinics at the VA hospital. You should call for a means test and an appointment. They will screen for PTSD. You shouldn't discount it as a cause. The regimentation of the military does have an effect on civilian life. Let them tell you that you don't qualify.

Medical information cannot be shared with other branches of the government. HIPPA prevents it. Of course that doesn't mean that it can't happen - just that you'll have just cause to sue if it does. That's not a good excuse to use to not seek help though. Depression is torture.

There are, possibly, other free resources in your area. Call 2-1-1 if it is available - it's the united way help line. If it isn't available in your area, search for information at your state's website.

I think there is more help now, then ever before.........but I am glad you are being cautious, as i understand your aspirations and goals, and the government on mental health issues........here are some really good resources I know of, and one can lead to another, so follow the trail.......so to speak.......
I would also think that even if you dont have PTSD, which is sometimes over diagnosed, that the events of war, your comrades, etc. would still effect you.........there is also reentry depression and delayed depression, which most know about, also.......
I use EFT on everything ,and I hope that is your first stop after reading this, because it does heal ptsd, and depression , and you can learn it , apply it yourself, (all for FREE)and/or get a therapist to work over the phone with you for a fee
Gary Craig is retiring , and closing the site in march........so get the free download before then.....
otherwise, search for veteran groups and support groups, also
I am also giving you a potential money maker, as the guy who founded it has veterans coming home in mind as a way of income........
Sometimes prolonged stress causes depression and is thought to be the root cause of ptsd, as well, an adrenal deficiency.......so get your hormones checked by EXPERTS like those below....regular docs are not trained in this.....or visit a university hospital where the pay scale in based on income........also search your area for clinics, income based........
take care of yourself........

Hi Jabo...

The first step to recovery is realizing there is a problem, so you are on a great path. I know many veterans that have faced similar feelings of depression... this is very common and there are great resources that can help you. You can choose to get involved with a resource that will leave you anonymous so you can be worry free about your work life. I know about a web-based resource that provides veterans with tools that help with readjusting back to civilian life. The website, www.vetsprevail.com, is an interactive database created by veterans. It offers a social community where veterans, active duty military, peers, and family all over the nation can communicate and share their stories with eachother. It also provides a completely free training program that helps fight depression and stress. You can also try Military One Source at www.militaryonesource.com and the Defense Centers of Excellence at www.dcoe.health.mil... good luck!
