Why should we elect a president with a history of mental health illness?

Why should we elect a president with a history of mental health illness? It has been determined clinically that Senator John McCain has a history of mental illness. In fact, the senator has openly discussed attempting suicide twice.

The mental trauma which he suffered as a POW simply did not vaporize upon his release. Frequently, manifestations of mental health illness can resurface long after a particular given trauma. That is why many people who have a history of mental health illness are barred from certain types of employment positions. Society and government have the duty and responsibility to protect the health and welfare of the mentally ill as well as protect the other members of society who could be harmed by the actions or inactions of a person with a mental health illness.

As a senator, John McCain has not had the kind of authority of power that comes with the office of the presidency. A president wields much more control over the well-being of the country and its citizenry. Such authority and power must never be compromised by the inability to think clearly or make sound decisions for the country and its citizenry.

Earlier on in the primary election, Senator John McCain released medical records pertaining to his physical well-being. Given that Senator McCain does have a history of mental health illness, should the senator be made to release his records pertaining to his mental health?

I am a registered republican and have been for years. I am a married white 49 years-old male soon to be 50. Although I find myself in disagreement with the republican party on many issues, especially involving the war in Iraq, the economy, and affordable health care for all Americans, I am particularly concerned about Senator McCain's mental stability. Perhaps unlike many families across the US, my immediate family has a medical background. My wife is a clinical psychologist, our son is an internist (MD), and our daughter is a mental health social worker.

Cluster B: The Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)

HPD Behavior:
The HPD behavioral style is charming, dramatic, expressive, demanding, self-indulgent...inconsiderate...easily excited, and intolerant of frustration, delay, and disappointment. The words and feelings they express appear shallow and simulated rather than real or deep.

These individuals can be quite effective in situations where a first impression is important and vague expression of ideas is preferred over precision. They are less effective where performance is measured by objective measures of competence, diligence, thoroughness, and depth. Acting, marketing, politics, and the arts are fields where individuals with HPD will do well and manage competition effectively.

The body, erotically or via illness, is often used by individuals with HPD to attract the attention of others. They will engage in inappropriately exaggerated smiles and continuous elaborate hand gestures...

Individuals with HPD...hide their true cognitive sterility and emotional poverty. HPD cognition is global, diffuse, and impressionistic; these individuals appear incapable of sustained intellectual concentration; they are distractable and suggestible. They avoid introspective thought.

...The[y] are prone to alcoholism and drug addiction and are quite adept at denying the related behaviors. They seek easy escape from pain, deny negative consequences, and fail to observe or accept responsibility for the impact of their behavior on others.

John McCain is known for his out of control temper and tantrums. However, he seems to have performed his duties as senator without any mental health issues.
I just don't think he's up to the task. There are alot of problems to be dealt with and we need someone with some youth, energy and fresh ideas cause the old ones aren't working.
