what should I do career/education wise???please help?

what should I do career/education wise???please help?I want a job that will make a difference. I didn't take school seriously due to personal problems so I'm not very smart plus my parents don't encourage my education, but I know I want to do something in mental health hopefully specializing in eating disorders and sexual abuse.
Should I go to TAFE and do the course IV MENTAL HEALTH which is a 2 year course (its not university) so when I finish I would get a salary of around $ 40- 45,000 a year. jobs include case worker, community worker, coordinator, mental health worker, support worker etc.
or should I go to uni and do nursing which is a 3 year course (plus I didn't get enough points to get straight in) so I'll have to do a year of associates degree in general studies)
and when finishing a salary of $ 60-$ 75,000
I'm thinking nursing :) I'm just worried I won't be able to pass exams.

Answer by DrIG
In my opinion your best course of action is to go for the three year nursing degree. Think how your life will be different earning about $ 30,000 a year more.

Mental health diagnosis when patient refuses assessment?

Mental health diagnosis when patient refuses assessment?I have been a professional psychologist and with the law changes in 2000 and a accident I was unable to qualify and still be called professional. the laws and rules have changed, however I need some help.

A woman that I know very well has been sexually abused by her father and psychologically abused by her mother. the Mothers illnesses seem to be paranoia over the men in her daughters life just after money and then will leave them or are having affairs. the mother is proactive in conveying her wishes and paranoia's in rants which can last considerable time (years).

There were also deaths within the family (parental as well as a sister) and around the same time the mother became menopausal.
The son suffers with Agolia and is withdrawn from the family who are embarrassed about the issue.

the woman in question has long since wanted a relationship and married the father of her child, the couple had a good relationship which was marred by the mothers ravings.
The couple split up due to him witnessing the abuse as he wanted the woman to move away from the abuse and though it would speed matters along.

The couple got back together some months later, as the woman did not believe that they were financially secure, though she was making payments on behalf of the guys business. She would later go on to say that the man was not working, which her mother was not aware that he was working hence her ravings were based on his unknown reason for absence leading to the affair allegations.

The mother was emotionally abusive toward the woman, telling her her false fantasies which were becoming real to the woman. there is a distortion of reality from the woman and events are not as they would appear in tangible documents marking the events.
the woman is in the false belief that the man was unfaithful and that is why their relationship ended, the woman does not recall the abuse from her parents.

The woman seems to be suffering delusional disorder, though she presents a weak schizophrenia case.
She reads letters and claims they say something different to the content.

She has admitted - "you confused me so, just when I think I have my head sorted"
and makes the admission of living a double life.
When presented with the facts, they become distorted when her delusions are challenged and has made false police reports.
I am concerns also as she is actively destroying evidence which supports the true facts.

the woman is refusing to take an assessment and is accusing many people of lying, I do not seem to be able to make headway in finding a person that would be able to start the process by reviewing her swarm testimonies, and the documents showing the facts which differ considerably.
The difference being that the delusions are from what I have noted are the ravings of the woman's mother.
There are elements of sexual abuse, psychogenic amnesia and a 6 year old child is in distress and there are also signs of sexual abuse of the child.
I have called mental health and they cannot take my referal and they also cannot take steps based on not seeing the person face to face. Social services have been lulled with a fantasy story which is plausible and are favouring the easy route.
I have invited them to review the documents on 4 occasions and they have refused.

What should I do? where can I get a initial review?
What do I need to do in court to move forward?
Do I need to section her, and how? I'm bared from doing this and cannot make the referral.
Thanks for the abusive comments toward me, I was a professional psychologist, but I was involved in a hit and run and suffered amnesia and had to learn how to do a lot of things, Psychology was not one of the things that I had a pressing need to relearn.

I see that the stereo-typical typing is quiet common place, yes the child is mine and yes I have evidence of the child's sexual abuse, CYPD have refused to look at the documents and witness statements from 11 witnesses where the child has reported concerning things, acted in an adult way.

I too would have gone down the route that she is telling lies, however the 'lies' match the story I know of the abuse from her mother. yes she has not long moved away from the source of the abuse, but still it seems to be occurring ( having been there to witness the psychological abuse).

It would seem that the correct channels have been blocked because of my relationship to the woman and child, and yes they seem to be singing from the same hymn she

Answer by Frank Thomas
If you are a real psychologist, you should know very well that you can't diagnose someone without seeing them in person. It sounds like you're obsessing and meddling. Leave these people alone and work on your own problems. I'm having difficulty taking you seriously because your written account is messy, poorly formatted, and full of grammatical and spelling errors. Just mind your own business.

Answer by Joy
I'm not at all sure that I understand the entire issue here to be honest but at the end of the day you can't force this woman to have an assessment even if you are practising as she is not a danger to herself or another. Who exactly is abusing her 6 year old child? If that is provable that may be a place to start but do you want to alienate the woman by taking this route first?

She may well be delusional but that's not easy to prove either especially if her mother is backing that up. Does the woman live near or with her mother who is causing a lot of the problem? You are not the father of her child by any chance are you?

I can't see why or how you are this involved in a patient's/friend's life to be honest. If the woman and her mother are singing from the same hymn sheet how can you expect to take any action? It occurs to me that she is not necessarily delusional but lying. If this is her evidence you can't say anything if she's destroying it - that is her right to do so.

As you rightly point out you have no authority to take action never mind get her sectioned. You can't take any action other than report the suspected child abuse of the 6 year old and if there is no evidence I suspect it will lead no where. At least you will have done what you can. If you are not the father of the child then I can see no reason for your involvement at this personal level, it is not at all professional. I think you need to take a step back from all the emotion before you reconsider what is going on for yourself.

Answer by placidazure1
You were never a professional psychologist.Your ignorance of abnormal psychology is blatant,as is your ignorance of grammar and sentence structure.Your inability to cogently discuss a case file-or even intelligently relate a progression of facts illustrates that you possess a rudimentary education.

Any leads for finding a psychiatrist who will work on a sliding scale?Specifically in the Los Angeles area, but more likely, any directories or databases. I don't have mental health coverage and I've been 'rejected' by community mental health centers on the basis that I have a job. Unfortunately, I don't have a job that allows me to pay $ 200/hr for private psychiatry...

You need to call you local psychiatry outpatient place and talk to them. There's one by where I live and they do it. I think they're everywhere.

You can contact your county's Department of Mental Health (below) and explain your situation and what you are looking for and they should be able to give you some good referrals to some psychiatrists that match your situation.

Libs, is 3,000 in stimulus funds enough to teach African men how to properly wash their balls?(CNSNews.com) – The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), spent $ 823,200 of economic stimulus funds in 2009 on a study by a UCLA research team to teach uncircumcised African men how to wash their genitals after having sex.

Libs will point out it was the genitals and not the balls. Yet will totally miss that in a recession $ 823,000 of government money was used to study the dirty foreskin of men in Africa.

Try contacting the hospital Social Worker or the Chaplians office and see if you can get any advice....

There is a chance that right now she is not stable--maybe she has 'reported' some kind of fear about the family--or confessed that she has some kind of issue she would rather not have you know about---maybe a drug dependancy you have not been aware of... This sometimes does happen even to a Nurse....

There could be some privacy issues going on here...

A social worker may be able to let you know if this is the case or at least give you a clue to if something confidential is going on....

I will tell you that even parents of Young children Do Not get to know what is happening on a Psych hold at a hospital which is very difficult so I can imagine that with an adult it is much more difficult to get info.....

Media Silence on Antiwar Violence (updated)
Patrick Poole
An Air Force airman was shot by antiwar protestor on July 4th, but the establishment media and liberal blogs yawn. Airman Jonathan Schrieken, 22, is fighting for his life after being shot in the heart by a gunman intending to make an antiwar statement, while standing outside his home near McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey on July 4th. Airman Schrieken, a loadmaster with the 6th Airlift Squadron based at McGuire, remains in critical condition at a Camden, New Jersey hospital.

The antiwar gunman, Matthew J. Marren, killed himself after shooting Schrieken and left two suicide notes explaining that he was "mad at the government".

Meanwhile, the establishment media ignores the story. The initial Associated Press report on the incident never mentioned Marren's motive for shooting Schrieken. The first media outlet to discuss Marren's intent to make an antiwar statement on the 4th of July by killing a member of our military was Phillyburbs.com, and the story has only gained national attention after a post over the weekend at LittleGreenFootballs.com.

A member of Marren's family described to Phillyburbs.com his reasons behind the attack:

Marren's aunt, Terina Henderson of Trion, Ga., said she spoke to Marren's mother yesterday who told her Marren left two notes, one in his home and one in his car, indicating he was upset with the government.

She said she did not know the exact wording in the notes, but said Marren was "mad at the government and wanted to make a statement ... that's why he did what he did on the Fourth of July."
Over at LGF, a friend of the Schrieken family described the attack:

He had been on leave here in Ohio and got back to his home off base and was unpacking stuff from his car when this 22 year old guy walked up to him and asked him if he lived in the house. When Jon said yes, the guy said "not any more" and shot him point blank in the chest. He tried to shoot him again, but his gun jammed. Jonathan made it into the house. The guy then shot himself.
This makes it clear that Marren had nothing short of murder on his mind. Providentially, the gun jammed, allowing for Schrieken to escape into his house, where he lived with several other Airmen.

If Airman Schrieken had been an abortionist or homosexual, this story would be front page news for the New York Times and the lead story on CBS News with Katie Couric for at least the next month. But since Schrieken is serving in the military, even his hometown newspaper, the Columbus Dispatch, has ignored this story.

Predictably, a law enforcement spokesman says that Marren's suicide notes "were indicative of an individual suffering from mental-health problems", but that raises the question of how anyone could identify anyone suffering from mental-health problems amidst those devoted to bizarre conspiracy theories and the virulent anti-Americanism of the antiwar movement. If anything, Marren would have fit right in unnoticed.

It is also worth noting that Marren was merely following the logic of the anti-war movement's standard public rhetoric. Their language is laced with suggestive undertones justifying attacks against our military, calling our armed forces fighting the War on Terror "baby-killers", constantly invoking the specter of Abu Ghraib, and citing their grossly inflated statistics of civilians accidentally killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Such reckless and unbalanced rhetoric (they're not quite as adept at keeping statistics on those murdered by terrorists) fuels the hatred that drives someone like Marren to violence against a member of our own military.

Antiwar supporters will no doubt disclaim any responsibility for Marren's attack, but in any other circumstance involving someone engaged in a politically incorrect crime, Leftists would not hesitate to point their fingers at the conservative movement. One might recall the attack on "right-wing talk radio" following Matthew Shepherd's murder and Hillary Clinton's indictment of the same after the Oklahoma City bombing. Add to that the attacks by the ACLU and others on the pro-life movement after the shootings of two abortion doctors in the 1990s.

But now that someone has acted on the antiwar movement's anti-military rhetoric, don't expect to hear any apologies from Cindy Sheehan, International A.N.S.W.E.R., Daily Kos, or Rep. John Murtha. And certainly don't expect the establishment media to give this heart-rending story the coverage it deserves.

I hope that Airman Schrieken will quickly and fully recover from his injuries. Realistically, his injuries may very well force him out of the military. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Schrieken family.

Update:

Readers wishing to send Airman Schieken a get-well card and thank him for his service to our country can reach him at:

What are adaptive skills when referring to mental retardation?

What are adaptive skills when referring to mental retardation? What are adaptive skills when dealing with mental retardation? I know what mental retardation is however I don't know the "adaptive skills". Could someone please explain and define asap. Thanks.

Answer by Sandy
An adaptive skill is when I use my perception to achieve the expected goal of what others want. I can play a piano. I can adaptively play the piano so it sounds like Chopin.
Its kinda hard to explain from my point of view.
Adaptive behavior is the collection of conceptual, social, and practical skills that people have learned so they can function in their everyday lives. Significant limitations in adaptive behavior impact a person's daily life and affect the ability to respond to a particular situation or to the environment.
It has to do with alotta junk that is Social and Societal Acceptance, So I can play the piano the way I like to hear it, or I can adjust to societies standards and play old boreing Ludwig Van Beethoven, Actually Ludwig is pretty good. But he misses a few Sharps in the 8th bar of the 2nd Movement Symphony 9.

Mental Health: Are you confused about Hillary Clinton's proposed National Health Care?

Are you confused about Hillary Clinton's proposed National Health Care? Here's a summary:

Hillary Clinton has unveiled the third part of her plan to ensure that all Americans have affordable, quality health insurance. Building on her proposals to rein in costs and to insist on value and quality, her American Health Choices Plan will secure, simplify and ensure choice in health coverage for all Americans. This Plan covers every American – finally addressing the needs of the 47 million uninsured and the tens of millions of workers with coverage who fear they could be one pink slip away from losing their health coverage – with no overall increase in health spending or taxes. For those with
health insurance, the plan builds on the current system to give businesses and their employees greater choice of health plans – including keeping the one they have – while lowering cost and improving quality. Specifically, the American Health Choices Plan will:

1.Offer New Coverage Choices for the Insured and Uninsured: The American Health Choices Plan gives Americans the choice to preserve their existing coverage, while offering new choices to those with insurance, to the 47 million people in the United States without insurance, and the tens of millions more at risk of losing coverage.

2.The Same Choice of Health Plan Options that Members of Congress Receive: Americans can keep their existing coverage or access the same menu of quality private insurance options that their Members of Congress receive through a new Health Choices Menu, established without any new bureaucracy as part of the Federal Employee Health Benefit Program (FEHBP). In addition to the broad array of private options that Americans can choose from, they will be offered the choice of a public plan option similar to Medicare.

3.A Guarantee of Quality Coverage: The new array of choices offered in the Menu will provide benefits at least as good as the typical plan offered to Members of Congress, which includes mental health parity and usually dental coverage.

4.Lower Premiums and Increase Security: Americans who are satisfied with the coverage they have today can keep it, while benefiting from lower premiums and higher quality.

5.Reducing Costs: By removing hidden taxes, stressing prevention and a focus on efficiency and modernization, the plan will improve quality and lower costs.

6.Strengthening Security: The plan ensures that job loss or family illnesses will never lead to a loss of coverage or exorbitant costs.

Answer by jneg7
I dont believe Hillary Clinton will make any Meaningful Health Care Reform being that the people involved in the Current Health Care system are one of her biggest campaign donors.

If you cant beat them join them. Or at least take theyre money. Right Mrs Clinton.

Answer by writersblock2006
The only PLAN should be to do away with private insurance plans.
Make universal helathcare truly universal.

Set the darn RED CROSS in charge of management of universal healthcare.

Hire Romney as the financial manager of the entire plan.
Have someone like Ron Paul or Kicinich in charge of oversight for the plan.
And have Bill Richardson its CEO.

But Hilary Clintons plan is just to get universal healthcare out there.
Its not a way that truly helps offer the best solution for the people.

I disagree with it completely.

Answer by Mike P
Yes, I've read that before and there are so many hidden complications to what she proposes, I can't get into it here. But in a nutshell, this plan won't simplify things, it will complicate them. Private sector businesses and the government do NOT simply co-exist. Once the Fed gets power over our health care, our quality of care will be decreased, not increased. For a variety of reasons.

"Stressing prevention"? 'Stressing' is just another word for 'mandate'. Imagine the choices that will be diminished once the government realizes how expensive this will be. The opportunities for the Fed to get more involved in our personal lives would be staggering.

Not to mention what this will cost individuals in increased taxation.

I could go on and on but this is just frightening.

The database that people who steal from stores go into is this checked by potential hirers?Do they check that database along with a background check? Does a background check include visits to mental health offices and shrinks, institutes those types of things?

Answer by Simba
If they are checking your background it would show if you have been convicted of stealing and it may even include a driving record check (depending on the job). However, I'm can't see how it would show visits to mental health offices. That is confidential.

Answer by Sarah
I've been caught stealing from a store before. Luckily, the security guard was nice enough to not have us arrested and answered all questions we had. He said that the theft part would only be sent to stores under the company. [In our case, it was Sears, & K-Mart was under its company] If we had been arrested for it, it would've gone on our criminal record & be on a background check. It mostly depends on the extent of your crime & if you were convicted. Also, health records would never be on a background check. "a beautiful mind" and mental health?

"a beautiful mind" and mental health?would you say the movie "a beautiful mind" portrays a negative, mixed, or positive image of mental illness? what influence do you think the movie has on the publics view of mental illness?

Answer by pink_pup
Positive, he came out well! he still had his wife, his friends, his intelligence, and it was controlled by medication. I think it influenced the public's view positively, to show that he can still be a completely normal person, and it really is a medical thing.

Answer by Reese's
pink_pup you are wrong. The actual person in a "Beautiful Mind" did not live such a normal life, he lost his wife (though she stayed close), did not have many friends, and was mentally and intellectually impaired by the medications given to him. He was given electro-shock multiple times against his own will. In fact, John Nash stopped taking medications and receiving help from professionals because he found it all to be stunting his mathematical abilities. Nash learned to control his hallucinations and coped with them for the rest of his life.

I think the film helped put a sympathetic light on mental illness, Nash is not a scary schizophrenic frequently portrayed but a tragic figure cursed by his own genius.

Mind Freedom: Mental Health Choice and Empowerment

Here are a few short clips from a panel representing mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors who spoke on how to further organize for change in the mental health system. The speakers are survivors of an abusive psychiatric system who became activists. The main speaker is David Oaks, director of Mind Freedom International based in Eugene, who describes his efforts to give choice, freedom, and human rights priority within the system. He talks about his own experience, how mental health consumers are being shut out of the debate, and the problems caused by too much influence of the pharmaceutical industry in mental health, including within the prison system. But he also is sets the principle of personal choice over use of psychiatric drugs as opposed to the forced drugging that often occurs. He makes clear his goal is change by peaceful revolution. What do I do I don't think I can handle my job anymore due to mental illness?

What do I do I don't think I can handle my job anymore due to mental illness?I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Bipolar. I currently hold a masters degree in sociology and have a job as case manager at a community mental health center. I am well qualified for this work, however, my mental illness makes it difficult to function. I cannot take constructive criticism, have trouble concentrating, and when I get really stressed I cut myself and become suicidal. I am in counseling and am on meds. but I still have a hard time functioning. I know it is hard to get disability with a lot of education behind you. I really don't want to do this. I have always had problems with employment because of my mental health problems.

Telemedicine and Parkinson disease: Improving Care and Clinical Research

Google Tech Talk March 22, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Kevin Biglan, MD, MPH and Ray Dorsey, MD, MBA, University of Rochester. The cost of clinical trials is rising, recruiting participants is increasingly difficulty, and monitoring safety is increasingly important. Home and patient appropriate technologies like the Marvell Plug computer and Google products can help address all of these issues. We will discuss our efforts to monitor blood pressure remotely using these technologies in a Michael J. Fox funded Parkinson disease clinical trial. Telemedicine using simple web-based video conferencing using, for example, the Marvell Plug computer and Google's services can also address large unmet needs in clinical care. Chronic conditions account for 75% of health care expenditures and affect over 140 million Americans. However, many have limited access to physicians, especially specialists, who can improve their care. We will present results of a pilot, randomized controlled trial of increasing specialty access using telemedicine to individuals with Parkinson disease residing in a remote nursing home and remote communities. We discuss future directions, including providing care directly into people's homes ('virtual house calls'), and ways that Google's services can provide additional value. A new variation of the Marvell Plug computer in planned as an interactive television server for the virtual house calls in a upcoming study.

Do you think it's silly that tobacco is legal while marijuana is not?

Do you think it's silly that tobacco is legal while marijuana is not?"An exhaustive search of the literature finds no credible reports of deaths induced by marijuana. The US Drug Abuse Warning Network records instances of drug mentions in medical examiners' reports, and though marijuana is mentioned, it is usually in combination with alcohol or other drugs. Marijuana alone has not been shown to cause an overdose death" - Quote via the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Administration

How to take precautionsfor diet & for mental health for my baby as i'm 9 week pregnant?

How to take precautionsfor diet & for mental health for my baby as i'm 9 week pregnant?

Answer by Maymie
For mental health, you definately want and need to take folic acid. Folic acid helps the baby not to have any kind of mental retardation.

Answer by cowgirl
Yes, folic acid. You can find it in green, leafy vegetables. Your body actually needs it before you become pregnant.

Answer by marian
yes, folic acid is what your body needs now. and it lowers the risk of your baby having brain and spinal cord defects. if you can't take vegetables, try taking Sundown's Folic Acid Xtra. that's what i take instead.

Answer by First Time Mommy
Take a prenatal vitamin once a day. They have the dose you need of folic acid as well as everything else for a pregnant body. Also, take care of your stress level. Believe it or not, your stress will affect your baby's level of "mental" health. Eat right. Avoid the obvious (drugs and alcohol). Drink tons and tons of water (you need more than the average person when you are pregnant). EXERCISE! These were all the things my OB/GYN told me to do when I was pregnant.

Mental Health: POLL: Do YOU Think There Needs To Be More Mental Health Awareness?

POLL: Do YOU Think There Needs To Be More Mental Health Awareness?I'm striving to be a famous mental health advocate. My whole campaign is called Listen. But I can't advocate if people aren't interested. I've given 2 speeches, 1 at my church that I asked to do. And I was invited to the Lions' Club. I know that there are people who back me up, and others who just don't care. I also have a whole Myspace page dedicated just to Listen. www.myspace.com/listenmha Please don't report me. It's there so you can get an idea of what I'm doing. My question is this....

Do YOU Think There Needs To Be More Mental Health Awareness?

I want to get lots and lots of answers, just to get an idea of what I'm up against. But I want to really hear it. Please, don't be a smart aleck. I want mature answers. Thanks!
Well, by famous I mean well known. Not glitz and glam and rich. Thanks for pointing that out... I'm going to go change that right now! I guess people get the image of celebrities.... NOT what I'm looking for! I'm thinking Dorthea Dix...

And YES... I think there needs to be more awareness and clarification of mental illness in all spectrums.

Yes, Most definitely, I have bipolar disorder and people are down right crude. They don't know anything about bipolar, but yet their ready to discriminate against you for having it. I've been told that I was crazy and too dangerous to be out in public. Heck, I take my medications as I should and trying to live my life the best way I know how. What do you think of youth mental health care?

What do you think of youth mental health care?Hello, everyone, I'm currently working on a bit of a project and would like some opinions on youth mental health care.
Accessibility/availability, cost, usefulness, a personal experience, etc.
Any opinions you may have on the subject.

Answer by Emily S
My mental health care kinda sucks. I work for a major hospital and my coverage is limited to their mental health clinic, which is an absolute dump. Security guard in the waiting room, patients rocking back and forth and talking to themselves and everyone around them, screaming in other languages. I waited for an hour for my appt before walking out. For that facility I would have to pay a $ 20 copay. There are 2 other types of providers for my health care plan: some I can see for half of whatever their hourly rate is, and the rest I would have to pay full price for, depending on what plans they participate in.

Answer by eighthours
is this a UK question please?

Answer by Sylvia F
Hello

I have so much I could say on this particular subject..
I have in fact spent 5 years in pursuit of honest explanations as to the hows, whys and wherefore of the workings of mental health service regarding young people..
This involved both the Health Care Commission, The Health Service Ombudsman and eventually General Medical Council..
It appeared to me that so many "allowance" were allowed to Health Care Trust that were the cause of my complaint, it was a pointless effort on my part..
If I had been able to employ legal help, I believe,it would have had an entirely different prospective.
Unfortunately, from my situation, I was not in a financial position to do that..

So, although the Trust in question had been found to be lacking in many areas, because I did not have the funds to take this further, to bring them to court, they were allowed "off" lightly...
Even though my son lost his life because this Trust was influenced rather by priority of those cases which would gain funding for the Trust, rather than look to help those most in need...

I'm afraid I cannot explain all to you..
It would take far too long..

I am extremely interested in your project.
If you feel I can help you at all. please contact me...

Anything that would help bring forth changes..
I would like to help with..

A friend to your project..

Should I become a teacher or holistic mental health worker?

Should I become a teacher or holistic mental health worker? My childhood dream was to be a teacher as working with kids satisfies me emotionally and i have lots of experience with kids. But when i actually taught for 1.5 yrs in public schools I found myself exhausted. I never yet earned my credential. As an adult I took up spiritual life and wanted a career more in tune with my yoga and meditation practices. For two yrs I have been working at a mental health center and teaching yoga meditation and nutrition as part of the job. This is satisfying spiritually but this severely mentally ill population burns me out. I feel I have to earn some higher degree or I will be stuck just barely making ends meet for the rest of my life (I am 33). But I can't decide which way to go. Holistic therapist or teacher. Working with kids seems necessary for my emotional health yet doing spiritual work seems necessary for my inner happiness. Going into 60,000 debt is also not appealing to me and seems like a big scam of society that we have to go into such big debt in order to take a career that is in the service of humanity. What to do - any tips?

Answer by Mello1
I vote for the mental health choice. There's a desparate need out there that is certainly going to escalate because of all the problems in this modern society. You'll have a secure job for life, it is sure to be very rewarding personally, and you'll be bringing help and hope to those who need it most.

Mental Health: What is wrong with me (i.e. mentally)?

What is wrong with me (i.e. mentally)?I may be indulging some hypochondriac-like paranoia by doing this, but every time I look up a mental illness (bipolar, borderline personality disorder, attachment disorder, Asperger's, depression, GAD, etc.) I end up having lots of or all of the symptoms. I know these don't officiate as actual bases for diagnosis, but I consistently turn up having results on Facebook quizzes that indicate a real problem with mental health, emotions, self-image, and suicidal tendencies. When I was younger I was diagnosed by a doctor that I had Asperger's and attachment disorder, but I feel like there's more and I feel like there's a lot wrong with me that shouldn't be ok. I feel bad about this, but as recent as within the last month I have done things like abuse things to release stress and anger. I masturbate at a frighteningly frequent rate (although it could be just me being a teenager), I eat when I'm bored, I'm irritable and sore all the time, I've "fallen in love" with lots of people since puberty and only ever received rejection, I once stole a scalpel from my school's biology lab with the intent of harming myself (though I didn't have the guts to do anything), I care very little about my hygiene. There's just a lot wrong with me!
I'm looking for suggestions of treatment and diagnosis.

Answer by Carissa
it sounds like you have depression and anxiety.

Answer by Mr. Mike
A few things that I believe might help you:

Are you under the care of a competent mental health physician? If not, I highly recommend you do what you have to do to get it done. Seeking a diagnosis and treatment plan HERE is not a good idea. The fact that you ask for these things means you know that you need help. Get it.

If I don't eat right and take care of myself with daily exercise, I fall into the same pattern you describe. I become depressed, I eat too much and I am soon noticeably over weight. Then I eat more, and it gets worse. Not a good cycle.

If I watch my diet and exercise daily, the opposite pattern starts to happen. I feel better about myself, and I look better. This motivates me even more and a good, healthy cycle begins. I interact with people in a more positive way and I get a much better reaction from them in return.

If you are abusing things and contemplating harming yourself, possibly to the point of suicide, you do need immediate help. Don't delay. Even if you walk into an ER somewhere and tell them you have thoughts of suicide, you'll get some help from them.

I wish you the best.

How can my uninsured friend with mental health problems get help?

How can my uninsured friend with mental health problems get help?I have a friend who is unemployed and too old to be covered by her parents. I would like her to get some medical care for her mental health (we believe she has bipolar disorder), but I'm not sure how she could get help because she cannot afford it. Are there free public institutions that will help her out? She is currently living in Massachusetts.

Any information (especially about whether something like Medicare covers this), links, etc. would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Answer by Patty
I would contact the county she lives in they may offer free counseling or a sliding scale. Good luck.

Answer by Ms Cat
Look for a community clinic in your area... they are usually run by the county and they charge on a sliding scale so it is affordable and they do employ psychiatrists and therapists. Do not try to self diagnose her, take her to a psychiatrist. The symptoms listed for bipolar are really general and do not describe the disorder very well. Sometimes self diagnosis can be more harm than good.

Answer by palmers126
Type Masshealth into yahoo or google. Have your friend look over the criteria and it will determine whether she eligible (whether she can get benefits or not). She may not qualify for some benefits but, qualify for other benefits.

How does physical exercise affect brain function and mental health?

How does physical exercise affect brain function and mental health?

Answer by james k
PE = better blood flow and more oxygen to the brain. You can think faster, clearer, etc. You are happier and more upbeat and are not as enervated. That's why most original couch potatoes who start working out say that they have more energy than ever before.

Answer by kainks
Exercising helps one to relax by releasing endorphins through sweating. It helps one to reduce depression and also reduce anxiety. Also, with regular exercise, your body and mind is able to concentrate better at work and is more alert. You'll also sleep better and feel more fresh. It also helps you feel more energetic and happier.

Answer by Raptor
I work out three times a week on nautilus equipment and I can't say enough about working out and I'm not a muscle man, just someone in good shape.

Working out increases the levels of endorphins in the brain, which are the body's natural painkillers. My pulse and heart rate also go up by working out and more oxygen goes into my brain, which feeds it. So incidentally, I have better memory and I think sharper and clearer.

Mental Health: My parents keep denying the fact that I may be depressed. They always have an excuse, and I know they're wrong?

My parents keep denying the fact that I may be depressed. They always have an excuse, and I know they're wrong?I have gotten to the point where I need to start acting upon my possible depression. My parents are denying it, and it's becoming worse. I am going to make a secret appointment with the Mental Health Clinic at the hospital in a week or so. I live in a rural place that is far from the city, so I don't have a lot of options.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Answer by Amaya
My mom did the same thing- she didn't acknowledge the possibility that I have a mental illness that needs treatment. What I did was calmly talk to her about it, knowing all my facts and not making a scene. I then said that I would like to talk to a therapist about this and see what the therapist says. It's sometimes hard for parents to acknowledge the fact that their son/ daughter may suffer from a mental illness because some then start to doubt their parenting methods, and wonder they went wrong but they need to know that it's not their fault- they did nothing wrong in raising you. Try to involve them as much as you feel comfortable involving them- don't completely block them out of this. Part of curing a mental illness is having support, and your parents can potentially be a huge source of support.

Hope this helps :)

Answer by Steve G
I am a severely depressed person as well. to be truthful, talk about treatment for depression is a myth. Society expects us to suck it up and function whether we're depressed or not. Medication doesn't help. So do the following: Go to a motel. shut the door. turn out the lights. Sit in this room all night without sleeping. Let the demons come. Let all your personal failings come to the surface. You will suffer the tortures of the damned. But come morning, you will feel better. You will sleep and wake up with a headache. But you won't be depressed. (At least for a little while.)

Answer by HERRAH.
I glad you made the decision of going to help. Good for you! As for your parents, they might just not want to admit the fact that you have you're on problems now and you're not a child anymore. (I'm not sure if you're an adult or not.) They may not seem like it but I'm sure they care. Maybe try sitting them down while nothings going on and just say, "I've been really thinking about..." Whatever you think would help. Tell them what's been going on in your life and explain these feelings.

Good luck and 'feel' better!

Answer by Jumping Trains
Good for you! If you still are in school, you could meet with the counselor. Now, he/she will tell your folks that you met but she is also trained in working with parents who deny anything is going on. If you have a car, then yes go to the Mental Health Clinic. Just be aware it is expensive, and if you want it to remain secret you'll have to pay like $ 80 in cash.

You don't need to go to the city, there are confidential therapists you can meet in a suburban area. Just make sure you find them from the yellow pages and check that they are in the Better Business Bureau (I assume you're American) so that you know they're legit.

Sorry that your parents won't swallow their pride. That happened with parents of 1 of my students, and he ended up drug overdosing (died).

Keep the school psychologist in mind, it's free and they're used to handling parents.

Also, you can fight depression on your own by doing things such as :exercise, hanging out with people even when you don't want to, and eating healthy, and doing some volunteer work. While it won't cure the depression, it'll make it easier to handle.

well with all the websites, it is both. it depends on how it is used. it can be used to the users advantage if they know there preferences and us it in such a way, otherwise it can be quite harmful.

Answer by A Nail-Gun Is Not A Pillow
More and less...(I stand firm on that!) ...Seriously, I think it can be both, even at once. For people that can't or don't get out much, I think it's a good way to connect with humans outside your own world. The down side is, that it can become your primary way to communicate with others, even if it needn't be. I know for me it can be depressing to think that this is just substituting for a "real life." Whatever that is!... ;-)

au contraire, we become physically detached from the world.

Answer by Mike Garcia
Yes, at large the internet has been shown to reduce depression and feeling of loneliness in populations studied. But the larger issue is if you are becoming incapable of engaging in face to face interpersonal relationships.

Domestic violence has no race, color, economic status and often times little to no warning before entering a household. I posed a question that I hope my research will help me answer: What psychological effect does domestic violence have on women? Through the UVU library online resources available I found a few articles that related to my topic question. The first article that I found talked about the effect of spousal violence on women's health and the research findings from the Stree Arogya Shodh in Goa, India. Some of the major mental health problems that domestic violence has on women, according to this article are; depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse and suicidal behaviors. The National Family Health Survey conducted under the stewardship of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, reported that more than a third of women between the ages of 15 to 29 years of age have experienced spousal physical violence. The consequences of domestic violence are wide ranging and encompass physical, sexual, mental and reproductive health outcomes.
Another article that I found stated that 20 -64% of all violence against women is from romantic partners and more than half of those women live with children under the age of 12. Women who have experienced intimate partner violence can end up with post-traumatic stress disorder. It states that intimate partner violence can be life-threatening for some women, but often results in injuries, immune disorders, difficulty sleeping, and gastrointestinal problems. There are also mental health impairments that come along with this form of abuse, including low self-esteem, psychological distress and most definitely post-traumatic stress disorder. What is post-traumatic stress disorder? It is a syndrome of intrusive re-experiencing or witnessing an event involving feelings of fear, helplessness and horror, experiencing threat to life or physical integrity. So, why does intimate partner violence result in post-traumatic stress disorder? Intimate partner violence activates hormones in the brain which alter the body's natural ability to develop and manage cortisol levels. Those cortisol levels naturally increase with stressful stimuli and help organisms cope with transient stressors by altering metabolism and neural function. Unfortunately, prolonged chronic activation of this system can damage physiological functions, lower immunity and inflammatory responses, and, importantly, lead to psychological problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder which is related with the bodies inability to cope with stress levels. Women who have experienced intimate partner violence will often have higher levels of cortisol than non-victimized women. The stress level that occurs during and after a victim is exposed to this abuse can actually negatively affect a developing fetus and can cause psychological disorders. After a child is born, depression can contribute to less optimal caretaking behaviors because the mother's attention and interest in the child is reduced and she is not mentally available to assist her child with the emotion and regulation that he or she needs.
As I researched treatment options for these victims, I found one commonality in each article; no defined cure or treatment. Studies suggest that anti-depressants may help symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder but have not been confirmed. Another option for victims would be a long stretch of therapy with a councilor or special therapist. I am interested to find more information as far as treatment options go. On average a woman will return to her abuser 7 times before finally leaving. Studies have shown that couples who seek out therapy often return a year later and have changed their beliefs and attitudes toward the violence but have made no significant change in the actual violent behavior.
Domestic violence is proven to be a cycle that women often get caught in and often times cannot escape.
In conclusion, the articles that I reviewed clearly state that women who experience intimate partner violence are at a considerable risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder as well as several other psychological and health related disorders.

This article reviews recent literature regarding intimate partner violence and resultant post traumatic stress symptoms. Some of the factors that enhance and reduce the risk for post traumatic stress disorder including social support, coping styles, and types of abusive behavior experienced, are described. In addition, the unique risks associated with IPV for women who have children o

How to report a suspicious link with hundreds of Y!A mental health questions and Answers?

How to report a suspicious link with hundreds of Y!A mental health questions and Answers? One of the other users in the category I answer (mental health) found the following website:

http://kaxi.summerhost.info/

It's definitely not Y!A but its got hundreds of Y!A mental health questions and answers.

Can one report this site? What is it? Never come across this before.

Answer by Yahzmin (US)
No, you really can't report it. There are many, many sites out there that use YA input on their own sites. Some is done legally; some not so much. Here is why:

LEGAL: Yahoo has a special tool for site developers so they can 'pick the brains' of Yahoo Answers q&a, as long as they give Yahoo credit. You can see about it here:
http://developers.yahoo.com/answers

NOT SO LEGAL: Using those SAME tools - or simply using the RSS FEEDS that are scattered all over this site, other sites 'steal' the q&a here and disguise it as their own to draw folks to their sites for more traffic. Yahoo knows, but for the most part these are too many and too small for them to bother to prosecute for copyright infringement.

Would like advice for my mental health..? Do I have a mental disorder?

Would like advice for my mental health..? Do I have a mental disorder?Kay. So I'm fourteen years old (turning fifteen in a few months) and I have had a pretty traumatic childhood. Been depressed for.. approx 4 years now. I have self-injured for 3 years. Rarely do it now as I am trying to stop. (By rarely I mean a few times a month depending on my stress level).

For the past year or so, I have had this numb, empty feeling inside of me. Recently, I have been getting these "Panic attacks". I will start hyperventilating and sobbing, I get dizzy and feel like I'm losing control of my muscles, i start shaking and sweating too. The panic attacks really freak me out. :S

So I managed to get the courage to tell mum about it.. and she said things like "Shut up, I don't want to hear it. Just be normal" This hurt me a lot. :/ My dad is a psychiatrist but he doesn't see I have a problem, and he is wound up in his problems to care about mine anyway. I extremely dislike my father, He has hurt and betrayed me so many time that I do not trust him anyway. My friends persuaded me to see the school councillor. I am horribly afraid of councillors and talking about my feelings so I basically avoided talking about my problems and talked about my friends (who was there with us). I don't think I will be able to tell the councillor my problems.. But I will try.

Anyway. To the point... I will list some things about my mental health and how I cope with stuff.

- I have started to avoid social situations, like being with my friends or going to school.

- Over the years, my confidence has deteriorated. And I'm become much more reclusive. I spent the school holidays (2 months approx) in my room in the dark.

- As noted before, I can't talk about myself in real life. I usually hide behind the internet.

- The empty feeling is still there, I'm still numb most of the time. If i'm not numb, I'm upset.

- Other people mean much more to me than I do. And the idea of me losing people/upsetting them makes me freak out.

- I'm an only child and my parents are quite neglectful of me. Can go for a week or so without communicating with me.

- I can't get over things easily. I had a boyfriend who helped me through my depression and I loved him. I still do. And it's been 1 and a half years since he broke up with me.

- I often fantasize about me killing myself or having a terminal illness.

- Even if people tell me they love me, I don't think they do.

- If people say something even slightly insulting to me, I take offence.

- I never feel like I am good enough.

- I was molested at 11 years old, and now I'm afraid of most men.

- I've lost all my goals and am not motivated to do anything.

- I never know how to make up my mind and I usually just get someone else to do it for me.

- Also, I agree with other people, even if their wrong. Just to avoid any confrontation. Like i said, I have a hard time saying what I feel.

- I always fear that I will be rejected.

- I hate myself. Wait.. Loathe is a much better word. Haha.

- I blame myself for everything, even if its not my fault.

So yeah. I can't really see a therapist. Mums in denial, Dad doesn't care. I don't have the money. And yeah. I'm sick of feeling this way, every day feels like living hell. Mostly it's the panic attacks that have me worried. I've never had them before. And since I've been getting them, I've been constantly jumpy and on edge. Which isn't normal for me.

Any advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated. Please, no mean or hurtful comments. I just wanna be happy again. :/

sorry for such a long question D:
Dad has Narcissitic personality disorder. Basically means he's a selfish prick. Told him on many occassions that I want help. He just brushed me off and said I don't need it.

Both my parents know. They don't do anything about it. I have no other family. They all live in a different country. My friends mum however wanted to take me to the doctor herself, I don't know if thats legal. Aren't you supposed to have parental consent?

Answer by kytteneyes
if you can't talk to your parents nor the counselor maybe your aunt or uncle. if not have a friend talk to the counselor for you. some how some way you have to be heard. this is serious. Your dad should know. I mean once he has been notified by a grown up. If not make up an excuse to see the doctor like your stomach hurts or something like that then when they take you tell him/her. They will tell your parents that you have an issue going on and will need to address it then. Please get help.

What you need is to find new friends, mix around with some church or others society groups. Attend activities or services. Practise some sports, try to go and learn some thing like guitar, piano, modern dance or any thing that you like. Keep you body moving with many activities this will help your mind.
When you are at home take some recipes and bake some thing interesting, nice and give to your parents. Try to serve them in many others ways.Try to help in house work, keep busy. Do not stay in the dark room go to sun light. We need to try the other way around... not wait to receive love, care etc. give love to your parents they will be surprise and will start to respond to you better. Try and do not give up. Still a long way to go in life. Pray, sing, keep active. Do not let the negative things take over you.

Let me start off by saying it's a good thing you self harm less because i self harm everyday and it's really hard to stop......it's not easy talking to someone like a counselor and if you don't want t no-one should force you but like you said you could try.......you shouldn't fantasize about killing yourself because i am sure there are plenty of people that care about you and want you safe........ why are you scared that people will reject you??.....i'm sure your a nice and caring person and anyone who can't see that is a shallow a*s hole........you could go to your GP and seek some help...... i can't say i know exactly how you feel but i have severe depression and know it's ont easy to live with so feel free to e-mail me if you just want someone who you can trust to talk to.....

Hope this helped............ :)

You have so much you need to work on. My mother has Narcissistic personality disorder so I understand that part of what you are going through.

I suggest that you let your friends mum try and help you. She will be able to find out if you can get mental health help without parental consent. Every country has different rules about this.

If you have found someone who is willing to be on your side and show you the affection and care you deserve, then let this woman help you. You are very lucky to have found her.

I won't go into the details, but your upbringing sounds exactly like mine. My Dad also had paranoia and Bipolar, so he threatened to kill me if I told anyone or ran away. Nothing must blemish his reputation. My parents eventually divorced and I loved living with my newly emancipated mom.

This will be the hardest thing you will ever have to do, but I would call child protective services or the health and human services people (I don't know what country you're in) and tell them everything you've written down here. Even if you have to read it. Tell them you're nervous but that your life is intolerable. Then ask them if your friend's mother can drive you to them and then have them take you to the doctor. You can't live at your friend's house but maybe you can call cps from there. You may be temporarily put in foster care while cps develops plans for each of your parents so that they will have to learn and understand how to be decent parents in order to get you back and get you decent counseling and medication. It may be for a week or two (you would attend the same school), or it might be longer. You won't get in trouble for reporting them. You have rights, even though a minor. Maybe cps will help your friend's mom learn how to become a foster mom, for you, or if your parents split up or something, maybe she could adopt you. If ANYTHING bad happens to you, either from your parents, or while in foster care, have an emergency number or person at cps to call.

This is a big step in your life. Ask your friend and her mother to help you. Realize that neither of your parents is there for you, and they additionally are harming you. You have to save yourself, and avoid the hells and horrors that will plague you living with them.

Bless you and keep you.
