What Is the Best Mental Health Stigma Project? That you've seen, heard of or can make up yourself?
Answer by seesjayroo I'm not sure what you mean by that. When you say mental health stigma project, are you looking for an experiment to conduct to see under what circumstances stigma arises, what kinds of stigmas affect the mentally ill, or....? If you're a college/university student, you might want to check into your school's library databases (try "mental illness stigma" or something similar as a search phrase) to see what other researchers have come up with.

What should I do ??????OK I need some advice. I recently was offered a job with the NYS Office of Mental Health in the security dept. I have gone through 2 years of background checks, waiting periods, fingerprinting,FBI investigations, reference checks, ect, ect, ect. Yes finally I have gotten a job offer. Here is my situation,
I am currently employed with a small global communications company making good money. I have been here for 7 years. I work crappy hours (Overnights) and have no 401K or retirement. Business has been slowly declining since the recent US economy crisis.
My new position will start me at less money but will offer me better hours,NYSCOPBA (Officers union) membership, state pension after 20 years of service, room for advancement and great pay (More than x2 of what I am making now) after 7 years.
I heard Emergency personnel positions are safer than most other jobs out there and as a union member they protect my job.
Can anyone think of a reason I should turn this opportunity down?
Answer by Mustang Sally
No.
Answer by danbospd After being in Law Enforcement for over 24 years - I have seen the cycle of applicants - that range from love of the job - hearts all in it in good economic times to the current situation of job security and benefits are the number one reason to get in.
Truthfully - I have seen great success stories and Great careers come from both situations. The truth of the matter is that regardless of economic times, most people come to this profession because of love for the job - although economy may be the final nudge for the individual.
If your hearts in it - take the job. The pension and benefits are good - and retiring before 50 yoa is an awesome perk!

What can somebody do to improve their mental health? What factors should one consider when they are attempting to improve their mental health. For example if somebody is struggling with long term unemployment?
Answer by Olivia Rose One factor to consider is to know and understand what type of mental illness you may have, some being with you for life while others you may manage to get past. If you don't have any particular illness and you're going through a terrible time, such as long term unemployment, you may feel depressed and/or anxious but you may not actually be diagnosed as having it. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between if you have a mental illness or if you're stressing due to a tough time.
If you haven't been diagnosed with a mental illness but you think you may have a problem, try keeping your mind and body busy by doing things you enjoy and are interesting. Being close with family and friends is a good way to help yourself by being more involved in their lives. Online you can study about things/places you've always wondered about. Be good to yourself.
When trying to improve your mental health and you have been diagnosed with an illness(es) by a qualified physician be certain you take your medications properly. As I said earlier, some illnesses aren't curable and they're with you for life, but that's not the end of the world. Psych medications have come a long way in the last several years and they really do help when you find the right ones for you.
Along with medications and therapy, don't keep yourself hidden inside your house. It's important to get outside in the fresh air and sunshine, maybe going for a walk or taking a trip somewhere for the day. Just basically keep yourself busy doing things you would like to do.
Hope this helps. Olivia

I've never seen people who go through life wanting to kill everyone and having such venom. They are sick people and all need serious mental health counselling. I remember when they wanted to kill Denmark for a cartoon.
Answer by Donna M What is wrong with you? I don't support Hamas, but I sure don't support bloodsucking Israel either. People say that Hamas are terrorist, which they might be, but so is Israel. When they want to kill innocent civilians, and kill anything that is walking in Gaza that makes them twice the terrorist as Hamas!
Answer by darkAI You're forgetting it's not just Madonna's head they promised to cut off. Allow me to quote(Note it's Gazans who promised this):
"Muslim terrorist leaders threatened to forcibly convert Britney Spears and Madonna to Islam and warned if they resist, their heads would be cut off for "spreading Satanic culture," according to a new book released today. The threats, recorded on audio, come as Madonna is due to arrive in Israel Wednesday to celebrate the Jewish new year with fellow Kabbalah practitioners.
"If I meet these whores I will have the honor – I repeat, I will have the honor – to be the first one to cut the heads off Madonna and Britney Spears if they will keep spreading their satanic culture against Islam," said Muhammad Abdel-Al, spokesman and senior leader of the Popular Resistance Committees terror organization.
The Committees, largely based in the Gaza Strip, has carried out thousands of rocket attacks against Jewish population centers and scores of shootings and bombings."
And these are the people some people in the western culture prefer supporting over a democratic country who's trying to defend its civilians, which is not a right, but an obligation every country has towards its citizens.
Answer by Houssein D You are hilarious. Your question should be why would someone in there right mind support the IDF?
Rabbi's dont, Soldier refuse to serve, and every country except 2 have condemmed there attacks. and those 2 countries USA and ISRAEL.
900 ppl died. 400 children. thats a tad bit under 50% of ppl are kids. Doctors reported shots to the head for 35% of the kids that got killed.
Hamas puts kids in school, Puts food on the table and fights for freedom

Mental Conditions in Pythons?Just wondering if there are any metal conditions in pythons that may have resulted in my 3yr old Diamond's death? He was constantly falling from his tree, and broke his neck. I've heart of snakes having seizures due to an infection in the brain, but I don't think that was the case here
Background Story: I had a 3 yr old Diamond python that would fall out of his plastic tree in his terrarium numerous times a day. He was happy and healthy, he was fed twice a week with no problems, his sheddings came off nicely. I think the only thing that ever worried me was his yawning. But I had that checked and apparently he was just lazy He's been falling out off trees and off of things since the day I got him. He was a hatchling and my first ever snake, so I thought nothing of it. I'd done my research and nothing ever said anything about snakes falling off of things on health problems and facts sheets, so I thought it was normal. Then I purchased a Coastal Carpet python, the same age as him and put her in the terrarium. It was never a problem, and both seemed perfectly healthy. It wasn't for a while after I got her that I realized that I had never once seen Shnaps fall out of the tree. Not once. And Monty did it on a day to day basis. But, again, I brushed it off - he'd always done it. It was like his "thing" or something You have no idea how much I regret it Sunday morning I came down to check them, about 7, like I always do. Monty and Shnaps were both up the tree, looking as they normally do; fat and happy. I wondered off, had a shower, had breakfast, mum went out with my brother about 10. 15 minutes after that I decided I was going to get Monty out and watch a movie. You can't imagine my complete shock and horror when I found my favorite pet lying on the floor of his terrarium, with his head sort of stuck under his own coils and a mouth full of himself, completely motionless I walked away, took a couple of deep breaths, decided he was just having a "Monty" moment (he's eaten over half of himself before and had to be rushed to the vet) and that their water need re-filling. So I got a glass of water and re-filled their water rock thingy, purposely splashing Monty in the process. Normally I get a pretty savage reaction when I splash him; striking, hissing the whole bit. This time I got nothing. He was dead. He'd fallen from his tree and broken his neck on the way down Monty and Shnaps have been living together in the same enclosure for over 2 yrs, and were both happy besides the falling from trees
And that video is stupid, don't bether looking at it
Answer by maximushyrule it may have been the introduction of the other snake. if you recently got a new snake, and added them in with your first, then he may have been stressed out. the best way to introduce a new snake is to keep them near each other in separate compartments so that they can see each other but not contact.
Answer by Becky Some pythons do have neurological problems unfortunately, but I thought this was due to the Jag gene with carpets, was he part jaguar or pure diamond? It's a shame you thought this was normal, as it would have helped him to not have things to climb up onto and fall off. Introducing your new snake may have added a bit more stress tbh, but I doubt it would have been enough to affect him that much.

mental hospital?in mental hospitals do ya hav ur own room? and does a person who sees ghost doing stuff go 2 a mental hospital? how long do u stay in mental hospital?wat do they do in a mental hospital?
Answer by honhill Some mental hospitals have single rooms, some double rooms, but always with the same gender. A person who "sees ghosts" is likely delusional, and therefore a candidate for psychiatric hospitalization. With insurance restraints these days, a patient is usually stabilized on medication and therapy within a week or so then seen as an outpatient if the person can complete the "daily activities of life". Mental hospitals generally have activities such as a low key sport like croquet, quiet time with reading or watching tv, and daily sessions with your psychiatrist, medication time, 3 meal times, and group therapy where you talk to others in the same hospital ward as you.
Answer by patois It's just like a hospital for people who are very sick and might harm themselves or others or who are medically compromised / fragile, and just like a group home or college dorms for people who aren't very sick. Room arrangements are just like in a hospital with single rooms costing more than rooms for two or four people. People decorate their rooms and can have their own things just like at home if they aren't too sick. There are usually lots of recreational activities and facilities and a dining hall like a school cafeteria or boarding home family-style dining. Residents attend private and group counseling sessions and have lots of free time to do whatever they want indoors and outdoors. There's a lot of boredom in mental facilities, though. There's nursing staff and aides and counselors who form therapeutic relationships with residents. Residents make friends with each other and have frequent / daily visitors. Most stays in mental facilities are very short and last only until the resident has met his or her goals and improvement is observed.
Answer by Amanda most people go to a mental hospital because they may want to kill themselves , or they have come to a point that their mental illness is so severe that they can not take care of themselves. just seeing a ghost does not make you qualify to go to a mental hospital. You have to be in danger of hurting yourself or others. In a mental hospital, the patients may be given different kinds of psychotropic medications to treat the symptoms that they are experiencing. A person leaves a mental hospital when they are feeling better and able to function again in the outside world. They can leave the mental hospital when they are no longer in danger of hurting themselves or others.
Answer by Bill Sometimes you have your own room, sometimes not. Ghost seers sometimes do, especially if a clinical psychologist or similar professional thinks that the ghost visions are real hallucinations (seeing something not really there). Your stay varies. These days, after an emergency, about 72 hours and they kick you out. It's a matter of who is going to pay the bill for your stay. They do various things. Sit in groups and have group therapy, schedule appointments with a psychiatrist, prescribe drugs. eat food that isn't really that appetizing, mainly mope around. (How do I know this? I used to work in one. But that was quite a while ago, so my info may not be all that up-to-date.) Bottom line: avoid it if you can. Having a bunch of crazies around you is not psychologically healthy. After a while, you wonder what's normal.
Answer by Turtlelover :) some have single rooms but its depending and you stay at the mental hospital for as long as they want because they let you go when they think your "beter" and i think they just do tests and treat you for you mentalness @ the hospital and im not sure if you go if you see ghosts you go but im sure you do

Did I cross the line?A co-worker e-mailed a question to all the staff, asking them to send her a write-up of what they are most thankful for this holiday. I did not realize all the comments went into a newsletter mass e-mailed to all the staff. I said, "Hi … I've been trying to think of a long write-up about what the holidays mean to me, but only two things keep coming to mind and I don't think any further explanation is needed. I am thankful for Jesus Christ and what He has done for me as well as spending time with family. That is what the holidays mean to me. Thanks - Diane" I know one other person (my boss) mentioned God in her write-up. However, because I work for a secular mental health center, I feel I may have crossed the line in that write-up. However, nobody has said anything to me yet ... and quite a few of my co-workers who are on Facebook know that I am a liberal Christian (Episcopalian) who loves and accepts everyone. Am I overreacting here?
Answer by Taylor You should be fine. First of all, you didn't know everyone would see it. And most people respect and understand that there are people of different religions. No one will probably say anything. And if something is said about it, just apologize politely and explain that you didn't know everyone would be able to read it.
Answer by Yoshi! Christianity is the dominant religion in america(I'm assuming you live in the US). Unless the people you work with are a bunch of neo nazi atheists, I doubt what you said will hurt you in the long run.
Answer by ♥ || ♪♫ Br0wn Eyǝd G!rl ♫♪ || ♥ I don't think there is anything wrong with your response. However, the person who sent the original e-mail should've mentioned that your responses were going to be printed on the newsletter. If you are religious and that's what you are truly thankful for, don't regret that you said what you said... especially since another person mentioned God, it's not like you were required to be politically correct. :)
Answer by seamstress Yes, you are over reacting. Relax. Anyone who shuns a person because they believe in Jesus Christ and loves their family is someone not worth worrying about what they think about in the first place.
Answer by Steffen You did fine. The health centre is secular, but it doesn't require the employees to be.

Mental Health Nurse (UK): your experiences in the role, any advice please?Dear Yahoo Answers user, I am currently looking to apply for a 3 year full time diploma course, at UEA Norwich, to qualify as a Mental Health Nurse.
I would like to hear from people in the role currently, or with previous experience. What does the role consist of on a day to day basis? Are your experiences in the role generally positive or negative? Do you enjoy the role, find it fulfilling, or disappointing and frustrating?
Particularly with regard to me being a straight male, I am a little apprehensive about the social stigmas attached to being a male nurse. Although I am able to take knocks, so this isn't too important, if I feel like this would be a good opportunity to use my life experiences to help people, I will go for it regardless of what other people may think.
Also, any advice on initial earnings, salary grades, career progression? I ask because I will be 30 years old by graduation and need to be informed so I can consider the longer term when and if I apply.
Any constructive feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read and/0r answer

Answer by H1976 Follow your dream, the health service needs people like you! As regarding working within a mental health unit/ward, you will never have two days the same!
it is both rewarding and challenging and you will need to be a strong character to deal with this on a day to day basis.
Daily, it is a case of dealing with the clients on a level they feel safe and happy on, giving medical care as well as lots of talking! Do you like playing pool/snooker? there is a lot of that too!
Sure it can be tough, any job worth doing is sometimes, there will be the ones who slip through the net, but many more who walk out feeling like they have a new life, that feels good to see when you have worked with that person!
I came out of it because of personal reasons, I have 3 small children and the sometimes overwhelming mental work load was too much for me, as well as dealing with home life.
I hope you succeed. ;o)

Why is there such a stigma concerning mental health?People always say "I don't want to see a therapist and be labeled crazy!"
What's with that?
Answer by Mr Ed Mental health affects behaviour, and one's behaviour affects others. So when there is a mental health problem, others will tend to avoid the person having the problem. That is why nobody wants to recognize they have a problem. On the other hand, their not recognizing it will not make it go away, and if they are willing to see a therapist, they might find the help they need, to either deal with the problem effectively, or at least live with it. So the very thing they fear, they are aggravating by refusing to get help. Most people today won't consider you are crazy because you see a therapist.
Answer by Lacey Simona Well its due mainly because of a lack of understanding and knowlege. People remember the days when there were asylums and thats where all the "crazy, luney people got locked up" people hold on to that fear. The other issue is that mental illness is not like a broken leg or an epileptic fit you can't see it so therefore if you cannot see it does it even exsist? there are no physical tests that can determine if a person is mentally ill. It is all done through judgement and asessment of a person's behavior, emotions and physical symptoms.
The other thing is that the media is not always reliable as many people pick up on the news, read papers hear about mentally ill people who have committed horrific crimes e.g as in the case of murder but even though it does happen it is actually quite rare.
Alot of people feel that someone with mental health problems are dangerous to the public infact this is not true the majority of those suffering are more likely to do harm to themselves then anything.
I also think it's down the person's opinion and individual reaction some people grow up in an enviroment where they are taught to put a lid on their emotions, to stand up for themselves and not take things seriously and for that reason they may use that against others who they see are having problems as being weak in someway.
Answer by Lila There is so much ignorance when it comes to Mental Diseases and Disorders. It is people like that who prevent many from getting the help that they need that could change their lives for the better. Also there really is no such thing as crazy that word is a great part of the stigma.

Answer by Laura J If its serious, check with your city social services in order to see if they provide free counseling for people in need in your community.
We have one in our city for troubled teens or marriages or abusive relationships. From there, they recommend someone for mental health issues if that is the problem.
I doubt something on line is going to touch the issue if they need serious help. People respond to interpersonal contact.

What is the purpose of military behavioral health? One of my friends in my unit is about to go see a mental health professional at behavioral health for "abnormal stress reactions". The guy gets stressed out somewhat easily and it has sometimes had an effect on his job performance. However, he does try hard and can usually get the job done. However, his stress management issues have led the CO to send him to mental health. He is worried that he might get discharged or barred from deployment. What are the chances of this happpening?
Answer by Milos Komazec Theres not much to say, if it is a very bad case he won't e deployed. I don't think he would be discharged.
Answer by Hawk Eye He might not be deployable for now, but the point of behavioral health is to treat mental illnesses. Mental health problems are becoming more accepted as the illnesses they are, rather than something that can't be cured.

When I saw my doctor she wanted to admit me into hospital because she said I was a danger to myself. I managed to persuade her not to, so instead she referred me to the Community Mental Health Team. I'm seeing the mental health team tomorrow and I'm feeling really anxious because I'm worried about whether they'll section me under the Mental Health Act and admit me into hospital if I tell them the truth about being actively suicidal.
I just don't know how honest I should be with them. I'm wondering whether I should just pretend that I'm fine and that I'm not suicidal so they won't intervene. I don't want to end up in a psychiatric ward, but I really do need some help because I don't want to feel this way anymore.
Just wondering if anyone can relate to this or what they would do in my situation. Please help x
Answer by defeatedDOLL theres two options really and as Ive been in your shoes I understand exactly how your feeling... you could lie, which would be the easiest option now or you could be honest with them and tell them you are having suicidal thought which will be better for you in the future cause itll only come back :) I think that you should let them know that you want help and you know its wrong, because at least they know your not going to be refusing help and they wont put you on a high security. They will realise that, yes you may feel suicidal, but you know that its not right... I hope you stay safe and do what right...tell them the truth hun x
Answer by aila You have already acknowledged that you are "actively suicidal" and "really do need some help because I don't want to feel this way anymore", so you know inside that you should seek their help.
Ending up in the hospital is not the worst thing that can happen; you hurting yourself is. Don't view this possible outcome as a punishment or stigma. Instead, use the Community Mental Health Team as a tool to help yourself understand and work through your feelings. If you truly need some help and don't want to feel this way anymore, be completely honest with them. They are their to help you. But they can only do this if you allow them to. Treat them as a resource that you can use, and not something to be afraid of.
I hope you get the help you desire and deserve : )

What Is The Difference Between Clinical Psychology and Mental Health Counseling?I am looking to go to grad school and most of the ones i am interested in have a masters program in clinical psychology and a masters program in mental health counseling. What is the difference?
Answer by the_only_solorose clinical psychology is working with in patients mental health counselling is working with out patients
Answer by michele In terms of the cousework you take, the license/credential(s) for which you were later be eligible, the internship experiences in which you will participate, and the clients you may later serve...next to nothing.
The major difference is that the mental health counseling programs are typically designed as a "terminal masters" (you don't then go on in the same program for a Ph.D.). With a clinical psychology master's program, the typical plan IS to go on (at some point) to get a Ph.D. (some in the same program, but most in other programs).
Both can see both inpatients and outpatients. Both (when a few additional requirements are met) can practice independently. In many cases, both will sit side by side in the exact same classes.
Best of luck to you in your future educational endeavors, ~M~
p.s. If you plan to complete your Ph.D. at any point, I'd go with the clinical psychology master's.
p.p.s. If you do NOT plan to move forward with a Ph.D., it is VERY IMPORTANT that which ever program you choose (i.e., mental health counseling or clinical psych) is CACREP accredited (see: http://www.cacrep.org/ ). If it is not (and many are not, or are in "provisional" status), licensure later is going to present some very real hassles.
Answer by realme1960 They're both basically the same. A therapist or a psychologist listen to people with their problems. But neither of them are licensed to prescribe any kind of medications. You have to see a psychiatrist for that. A psychologist, I think, just has a little bit more schooling is all, but a therapist has a masters degree and is certified in counseling.

Jane Smith, RN, CPMHN It is a mental Health doctor
Answer by odzookers I'm not sure about the "P," but the rest tells me you're asking about a nurse. I would venture:
Jane Smith, Registered Nurse, Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse
The "P" could also very likely stand for "Public."

Whats everything that community mental health centers provide to patients and families? Services provided by a facility to a patient. Just broad, not specific.
Answer by Anna S what do you mean? like inpatient? as in psychiatric hospitals? haha you need to specify.
Answer by Iargainn It depends on where you live.
For public community mental health centers, the general standby is a psychiatrist to put people on meds. They have too many patients, and are more often concerned with sticking people on meds that might possibly eventually control the symptoms, rather than on fixing any underlying problems. Some places have a couple of therapists. Very few public community mental health centers offer group therapy.
Within any community, though, there is almost always an option or three other than the public system. If there is a university nearby, they may have a doctoral program in which student offer free or low-cost therapy/meds to the public. Don't let the fact that they are students scare you off- these are often the best psychiatrists out there because they are more open to learning, are better educated than their older peers, and aren't as jaded, so they are more likely to offer true help.
There are also religious organizations that sometimes offer sliding-scale services (psychiatrist, individual/couples counseling, group therapy, etc.). While they are located at a religious place (Jewish Family and Children Services is an example), the services offered aren't religious in nature, and anyone of any (or no) religion can take advantage of them (there may be exceptions, but that is the general way of these places).
Answer by Annette T I would be inclined to talk to your GP or CPN. They will be able to tell you what mental health provision there is in the community. Failing this contact your local NHS trust or visit their website.
Usually you will find that groups are set up for people who have mental health issue but that are fit and able to integrate with other like mined people. Often you find walking or music or even art therapy is on offer too.
Good luck and don't give up with your quest to find out. And I'm sorry not to be of more help but I know from my own experience that each NHS area provide different levels of provision many of which are run by voluntary organisations.
We still have a long way to go in the UK with care in the community for those with mental health issues but it is slowly improving though.

John Burbank, The Idiot from Seacoast Mental Heath Center
DO NOT TRUST THIS PERSON; John Burbank LCMHC is the most neglectful idiot you can find in the mental health care business. He works as a therapist at Seacoast Mental Health Center. He provokes and mentally abuses patients. Rather than taking responsibility for his own actions, he ignores requests to assist with access to medication, and conspires with coworkers and primary care physicians to involuntary incarcerate individuals who are seeking his medical help. If you have complains about his treatment, I urge you to write to the Board of Mental Health Practice, 49 Donavan Street, Concord NH 03301 or call (603)-271-6762 Video Rating: 1 / 5

Can a primary care doctor prescribe medicine for mental health issues or do they have to be a psychiatrist?
Answer by hotdogsarefree yes /they /can
Answer by froggy yes they can, but they may refer you to have a psych consult if need be
Answer by dreaming_angel1983 Yes they can. Unless you have a severe problem they will often try medication before they refer you on to a psychiatrist.
Answer by Terrible G A PC can write any drug there is. That in lies the problem. Too many PC's are writing Psych drugs they know nothing about. Shrinks should be seen if the person has MDD, PTSD, BP and really any major Mental Health issue.
Answer by jdphd a primary care doctor is able to prescribe medication for mental health concerns. however, not all primary care physicians are willing to do so for all of the patients they work with - if a doctor feels that a person they are seeing needs more specialized help with medication than he or she is able to provide, then that doctor will be ethically required to refer the patient to a psychiatrist with more expertise in mental health concerns and the medications used to treat them.
think of it this way -- if you have high blood pressure, your primary care physician can give you medication to lower your blood pressure. the physician can give you advice about changing your diet or exercising more frequently to improve your overall health, which should, in turn, lower your blood pressure. but if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse, or if the doctor thinks that he or she is not equipped to handle the problem to the best of his or her medical ability, then they will refer you to a cardiologist. it's just the same with mental health concerns, except that the physician will refer someone to either a psychiatrist for medications or to a therapist (psychologist, social worker, licensed professional counselor, etc.) for psychotherapy.

Should colleges make it a priority to spend more money on improving students' mental health?American colleges and universities are devoting increased attention to students who experience psychological problems, such as stress and depression, that are associated with the transition from high school to higher education. At a great expense, some colleges have developed a network of psychologists, programs, and treatment facilities to deal with their students' mental health issues. Other colleges and universities argue that they cannot afford the cost of addressing students' psychological needs, especially when budgets are already too tight. Should colleges and universities make it a top priority to spend more money on improving students' mental health? why or why not?
Answer by kazoo1991 no, you should go to a mental health clinic off campus
Answer by ic0lh1b00 No they shouldn't. Isn't it the persons responsibility to pay for treatment in America? Why would you need help to transfer from school to university? Surely if you can pass your high school exams and the entry tests for college/university, you are mature enough to cope with campus life. If someone is found to need counseling they or their parents should pay for it. Isn't that common sense?
Answer by Tsunderecracker In my personal opinion: No, absolutely not. Mental Health is not a school's responsibility, and it should not be part of every student's tuition to pay for the clinical needs of a few students. Perhaps the potential exists to include the cost of a psychological therapy department in the "rent" of dorm-based students, as they have nowhere else to go, much like an on-campus medical clinic.
Now if there is a psychology department that wants to run their own clinic, that is their their business, but I don't believe any schools should be required to maintain "a network of psychologists, programs, and treatment facilities to deal with their students' mental health issues." at the cost of every student.
I know I never used any on-campus facilities in the entire 7 years I attended school -- not the computer labs, not the cafeteria, not the public study areas, and certainly not the clinic, chapel, or therapists.

What would be a good basic summary of this article?I just need help i am not good at summarizing. Teachers always complain because i tend to plagiarize.
Anorexia Nervosa 56% Genetic Do not judge anorexics harshly. Their genes make them do it.
CHAPEL HILL – A new study led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers estimates that 56 percent of the liability for developing anorexia nervosa is determined by genetics.
In addition, the study found that the personality trait of "neuroticism" (a tendency to be anxious and depressed) earlier in life is a significant factor associated with development of the eating disorder later.
Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric illness characterized by an individual's refusal to maintain a minimally acceptable body weight, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image. It occurs primarily among females in adolescence and young adulthood and is associated with the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder.
People prone to depression and anxiety are more prone to anorexia nervosa. So would anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety drugs reduce the incidence of anorexia?
This study is the first published in the medical literature to estimate how much liability for developing anorexia nervosa is due to genetics, and the first to find a statistically significant association between the prospective risk factor of neuroticism and later development of anorexia, said Dr. Cynthia M. Bulik, lead author of the study, published in the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
"What this study shows is that anorexia nervosa is moderately heritable and may be predicted by the presence of early neuroticism, which reflects proneness to depression and anxiety," Bulik said. "Fifty-six percent heritability – that's a fairly large contribution of genes. The remaining liability is due to environmental factors."
Bulik is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan distinguished professor of eating disorders in UNC's School of Medicine and director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program at UNC Hospitals. She also is a professor of nutrition, a department housed in the schools of public health and medicine, and holds the only endowed professorship in eating disorders nationwide.
The reason she and her co-authors reached these conclusions where previous studies could not, Bulik said, is that their study was based on data obtained from screening a very large sample of twins. Their sample, from the Swedish Twin Registry, consisted of 31,406 individuals born between 1935 and 1958. None of the previous studies had samples nearly as large, Bulik said.
Twin studies continue to produce a wealth of scientific information about the human heredity.
The US National Institute for Mental Health says the death rate from anorexia nervosa is pretty high.
An estimated 0.5 to 3.7 percent of females suffer from anorexia nervosa in their lifetime.
The mortality rate among people with anorexia has been estimated at 0.56 percent per year, or approximately 5.6 percent per decade, which is about 12 times higher than the annual death rate due to all causes of death among females ages 15-24 in the general population.
But a March 2003 Mayo Clinic study found that the death rate from anorexia nervosa is no higher than among the general population.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — A long-term study of patients in Rochester, Minn., with the eating disorder anorexia nervosa found that their survival rates did not differ from the expected survival rates of others of the same age and sex.
The results, published in the March issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, add to the knowledge of anorexia nervosa and point to other areas that need greater study from researchers.
"Although our data suggest that overall mortality is not increased among community patients with anorexia nervosa in general, these findings should not lead to complacency in clinical practice because deaths do occur," says L. Joseph Melton, III, M.D., Mayo Clinic epidemiologist and an author of the report.
One argument for the cause of the discrepancy is that other studies used anorexia nervosa sufferers who were sick enough to require hospitalization. Whereas a larger set of all anorexia nervosa sufferers as the Mayo Clinic used brings in people who have less severe cases.
The Mayo Clinic also has a public health information web page that claims anorexia does cause a high mortality rate.
Anorexia typically has numerous complications. At its most severe, it can be fatal. Anorexia has one of the higher deaths rates among all mental illnesses, hovering around 5 percent but perhaps even higher than that.
Perhaps some anorexia patients have such severe symptoms that they damage their bodies through malnutrition while other anorexia patients end up eating more like calorie restriction dieters and perhaps even gain some life expectancy as a result. Though that seems unlikely since the calorie restrictionists try hard to make sure they get enough vitamin
