Mental Health: supplemental security income and mental health question?

supplemental security income and mental health question?I got a appointment on August 22, 2008 at 12:15 P.M. at CAM for a comprehensive substance abuse assessment. I got referred by Crisis Care in my first appointment with them! I don't know what CAM does but I'm hoping that they will help me with my mental health problems! Then I got appointment for S.S.I. on Tuesday August 26, 2008! So what do I need to know so I can get SSI or something coming in. The drs said i have Borderline personality disorder, trichotillomania, bipolar disorder, Seasonal affective disorder, etc.? I got like 20 hospital stays and a food stamp card. I am getting meicard card so what else do i need?

Food stamps, medicaid, income are just a few of the things. Here are some more....Section 8 housing (but usually not in the great part of town), and most importantly, while you are struggling with this, you need to get the hey out of dodge (your house) and educate yourself. Yes you read right. You need to go to your community college and take some credit hour courses. They will give you a free scholarship that you do not have to pay back EVER! A really smart person, ie, you, would take some Sociology, Psychology and other courses to help you understand your disability.

First and foremost, if you have medicaid card, it is extremely important that you start seeing a psychiatrist and counselor RIGHT AWAY! You need ALL this information documented by a professional! Follow their every request whether it be meds -which you should be on because of the bipolar, counseling appt, Dr. appt, whatever they ask do it.Social security only has maybe 2 handfuls of diseases they will count. BPD is NOT one of them. It is bipolar that will get you in. Why do you have an appt. with S.S.I?? Have you applied yet or is that what you did today? Did you get a denial letter? How many? Get ready to find a lawyer and don't accept one that wants more than 1/3 for their fee. You will not get approved without one and get ready for a battle like no other. But it will all work out in your favor. You have to be VERY patient. Depending on what state you are in, it could take 3 years or more to be approved and actually start getting a monthly check. But my girlfriend lived down in W.V and she was approved in one year. I just went through it all for 3 years! Bad thing is there will be no money coming in.Good thing is the longer they take to approve you, the more back pay you will recieve. And word to the wise, do not expect your back pay to come in one lump sum! Thats what I was planning. I got a dribble of money first, another dribble in 6 months then the rest one year from now. You cannot work and stand a chance with this. Being broke is no joke but thank the lord above I had my mom to help me out. A support system is also important. If they truly love you, then they will do the research about your illness to better understand. Us BPD people are hard for people to understand and handle. Also, you cannot have a substance abuse and get excepted. They will only approve if you are clean. I just noticed you went today for your appt. for S.S.I. The way you need to look at them is that THEY ARE the ENEMY. EVERY SINGLE WORD YOU SAY could be used against you. Be VERY careful what you tell them. Appeal appeal appeal all the way to federal level. Get a lawyer now. They get paid when you are approved. You can't do this without one! Sorry this is so long. But I just went through this journey and hardship. What better than to get advice from someone who has been there. Remember, I don't care how nice they are at S.S think of them as an enemy. It is their job to not approve you no matter what your situation is!!! Missi
