There are many techniques for verbal de-escalation of crisis situations, in various scenarios, including a mental health facility.
Here is a partial list of de-escalation techniques that experienced mental health nurses find to be helpful in a crisis:
- Assess the situation promptly. If you see signs and symptoms of a person entering into crisis, intervene early.
- Maintain a calm demeanor and voice.
- Use problem solving with the individual -- ask "What will help now?"
- Be empathetic.
- Reassure individual that no harm will come to him or to others.
- Avoid an argumentative stance.
- Offer to help.
- Engage the individual.
- Use stress management or relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises.
- Don't crowd the individual; give him or her space.
- Be aware of yourself -- your look, your tone.
- Offer choices.
- Use open-ended questions.
- Give the individual time to think.
- Decrease the tension with relaxation techniques.
- Ignore challenges; redirect challenging questions.
- Tell them what you can do to help them.
- Allow venting.
- Allow pacing.
- Don't say "you must."
- Avoid power struggles.
- Set limits and tell them what the expectation is.
- Be careful with your nonverbal behavior.
- Be aware of the individual's nonverbal behaviors.
- Be clear; use simple language.
- Language -- follow the rule of 5 (no more than 5 words in sentence, 5 letters in a word -- eg, "Would you like a chair?")
- Use reflective technique -- "Am I hearing you?"
- Agree to disagree.
- Be willing to break the rules.
- Consider using sensory modalities such as weighted blankets or calming rooms with stress reduction tools.
Guidelines to maintain safety of both yourself and others during situations of potential violence include:
- Take a position just outside the individual's personal reach (out of arm's reach) on the nondominant side.
- Maintain an open posture.
- Keep the individual in visual range.
- Make certain the room's door is readily accessible; avoid letting the individual get between you and the door.
- Summon help if the individual's aggression escalates to violence.
- If other patients are in the vicinity, ask them to leave the room to decrease distractions and protect the person's dignity.

Do you mean help them "heal." Well it's a law of nature that childhood experiences affect someone as an adult. It has to do with brain development. You can't do anything about that, at least right now.
What do you mean by "child mental health problems"? There are several laws in the US, that help adults get mental health help. For example, health insurance companies usually have to pay for mental health coverage and there are community mental health centers where you can get treatment. many therapists will also do sliding scale or reduced rates. If you have health insurance, you should find a therapist and get treatment there. Also perhaps go to a doctor for medication.
If you are talking about ADHD or other "childhood" problems, then you can still get help for those as an adult. In fact in many cases it isn't diagnosed until adulthood.
It sucks that you didn't get help earlier, but that's the way it is sometimes.

Mental health records are confidential. even if you are in the health care field, such as a RN, the records are confidential. The only way one can look at them is if they are treating them, such as the primary doctor or the RNs caring for you. There is something called the HIPAA act (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) that protects individuals such as you, actually it protects ALL people. This particular act prevents anyone discussing your records unless it is for medical purposes. For instance, 2 nurses talking about a patient in the elevator. That is a HIPAA violation because others can hear. This act protects and secures health care data of individuals.
Not a single person should know this information unless you divulged this information to them, or if they are "caring" for you in an medical environment and it is in your records, or the police could know if they were involved when you tried to commit suicide and they had to involuntarily commit you for a period. But, they are supposed to treat this info just as any health care worker.
You can also have your records "flagged" when you go into the hospital for any reason or in a medical environment. You tell them at the admissions desk you want to do this, that you only want minimal ppl viewing your records (a lot of people who work in the health care industry does this, especially they are in a hospital where they work. This prevents "friends" from checking you out to see what's going on). What will happen is your record will be flagged, and they will trace it to make sure ONLY the people caring for you views your records. Anyone else can get in BIG trouble. Electronic records leaves a trace of everyone who views. If you find out anyone knows any info without you telling them, or if they are not caring for you, you can file a complaint and possibly sue.
Hope this helps.
Answer by Andrea
Medical records are confidential. By law no one can see them without your specific permission. It's not like a police record that is open to the public.
Answer by birdgirl123
Many states have different retention laws for any type of medical/mental health record when dealing with issues that occurred under the age of 18. Some destroy the records two years after the person reaches age 18, some don't have a requirement to retain records of minors after 18, etc. It depends on the state you live in where and when the records will no longer be retained. Below is a state-specific chart you may want to check to see what in particular pertains to you.
In situation where it is required you sign a release to search your background, such as in law enforcement or the military these entities would look for your past records. The other people who have given you a lot of information regarding HIPAA laws are totally correct. If no one asks about the information, they will not be able to access anything about you without your consent. You don't give your consent, they won't know. Good luck.
Answer by Drew_Maryland
Advantages: the rights of the patient are protected, which could lead to reduced concern within a patient regarding the insidious stigma associated with mental illness. Plus, it is the law.
Disadvantages: it can be a pain in the ass for both the patient and staff when it comes to filling out releases of information in order to talk to anyone outside of the facility/hospital about the patient's care. The required for releases of information can also make it difficult to obtain information about the patient from previous providers.
All in all, I think most patients appreciate the privacy they are afforded. Along with HIPPA, confidentiality is a tool that can help patients open up and be more involved in their treatment without fear of everyone (those outside of the treatment team) judging them.
Answer by Freak
That's a tough one they want a spot free record. Seeing that you voluntarily admitted yourself that would be in your favor. I really don't know what to say, first things first though go to your doctor and get their approval if they can prove your free of this condition and there is no possibility of relapse that would also be in your favor. But don't this for granted your state may be different. Depression may not be that big of a deal. I suggest either you talk to an officer at the department you want to work for this is also a chance to take a ride along which you should do if you haven't already or contact the p.o.s.t council in your state and they'll give you a definite answer.
Answer by Adam
I would be inclined to lean towards it would be a disqualifying factor. Whether it was self admitted or not, the department would have to be willing to trust you with a handgun and others civil rights. Hiring a police officer is a huge liability to a city. I can't say for certain who's back ground investigators are thorough enough to find that. But if it were found you can almost be certain it would be a disqualifier. By the way you will not be able to find a doctor that says that you will not relapse as a doctor treats problems and can never guarantee a prevention of any illness. But the best way to find out is to apply and find out.

what is a mental health assessment?
Answer by Emm
I've had the same feelings and I sought help from my parents. They immediately labeled me as anorexic and sent me to psychologists, doctors, hospitals, etc. It turned my life upside down before I knew what was happening and made me feel worse about myself than I already did. People were literally shoving food down my throat and telling me what a horrible selfish person I was. It was the worst experience of my life. I later went out on my own and talked to a psychologist just about depression and finally got to the root of my problem. My suggestion is just focus on the depression before telling everyone about the eating troubles.
Answer by sammy
it sounds as though the depression ia causing you to stop eating.dont say the mental health assessment is your last hope because if you are dissapointed you will feel even lower.people can and do get better but it takes time and determination.they will only offer what you have already had but the main thing is you will have their support.
Answer by Nickelodeon
Chances are you've already been assessed since you have received treatment in the past. CBT is a short term based therapy that does not always work for everyone. CBT was partly devised to accomodate people with insurance that only covers so many sessions. You may benefit more from something more long term such as psychodynamic. You can do research and ask your counselor/psychologist what theory they tend to use. Some may be ecletic, meaning they use a variety of therapies to address issues based on client's needs. I would assume the depression is the main issue since eating is a symptom of it. If you can get over the depression then the appetite problems should also stop. Also, be detailed at the assessment about your past treatment - what worked, what didn't work. This will help your new clinican know what works for you and what doesnt. good luck

within themselves they may be better adjusted. depends on the individual.
but how society perceives androgynous people is another matter.
the more flexible and varied a person is, the harder it is for the rest of the world to categorise them. the harder it is to categorise them, the more issues prop up in general.
this can reflect back to the individual.
like i said, depends on the individual.

My sister is Bipolar. I love her to death but when she is not on meds i cant be around her. Im not being rude or nasty but when your off your meds your a different person. You don't think as clearly. Now if your meds are making you feel like a zombie that means they are not the right meds for you. Bipolar meds should just even you out. So what you need to do is talk to your doctor and tell them that the meds aren't working for you and you would like to try a different combo. Hopefully you will find the right combo of meds to help you. Everything will be alright hun. Good luck
Answer by J
Your problem is a common one.
Antipsychotics are well known for making you fat, tired, and unhorny.
With your doctors permission, there are alternative sources of generic medication available from India that are readily available online. They are allowed to be imported.
Hey, this guy online said that patients with psychosis often have high levels of norepinephrine and epinephrine and that beta blockers might help.
Answer by Trance
Ok, I'm gonna try to be as tactful as I can here.
I know you hate the meds. All of us on meds hate the meds. But they really do help. I'm not gonna nag you about them since you obviously are intelligent enough to know about the dangers of mania and the slingshot depression. But I am going to bring up the people in your life. When people are bipolar, their mania and depression affects everyone around them. You mentioned before about trying to stab your boyfriend.. what if something happens and you try that with your fiance, and you actually DO stab him? Or you drive recklessly (I was notorious for this when I was manic) and end up in a car accident?
You should definately tell your doctor. Most of the time finding the right combination of medication is a process of elimination. One combo that helped me a lot was Celexa (SSRI) and Depakote (anti-psychotic). I think both of those are on the Wal-Mart generic list.
But seriously, if you think you're a danger to yourself and others, you really need to get back on your meds. And fast.
Answer by Jennifer B
I understand completely. Talk to your doctor. Explain your concerns. You really, really need to be on the meds for your safety, and the safety of others around you, but you can't live as a zombie forever. It does take awhile to find the right med combo that works without zombifying you, because everyone's body chemistry is different. Don't give up!

Simple belief is considered normal, although there is such a thing as religious psychosis.
Answer by Oscaя françoise™
Some serious psychologists must really study and analyze religious beliefs and teachings in order to determine whether they are actually prejudicial for the believers, ie our role model is Jesus a victim, who accepts submission and subjects Himself to torture and murder at the hands of his Father, who tortures Him and kills Him in order to save the Sinners (his enemies). How much more psycho can it get ? I am a Christian and I believe in Christian morals, but I am also convinced that Christianity adopted dozens of PAGAN legends, symbols, traditions and holidays, which are historically false. It is time for Christianity to purify itself from paganism.
Answer by Amin K
The people that you are coming in contact with obviously are quite ignorant about mental illness and just what someone with such a mental disorder can achieve.
There is a law which now exist in which a company cannot discriminate because of having a mental disorder (such as bipolar disorder or depression). I don't know if that a company such as Walmart or K-Mart would consider part of their criteria with hiring.
You need to seek out this type of information. It is not necessary to state that you have a mental disorder when applying for a job. Try not stating this and see if you are able to obtain a position in a company.

Bipolar too...I'm pretty sure it's diagnosed with a good medical history & ruling out other illness.
Answer by sweet sue
You need to see a good psychiatrist who can do a history on you and help to determine if anything is wrong. There is really nothing like psychoanalysis any more. That was a frued thing. Now they have a book called the DSMVI that is the bible for psychiatric diseases. If you fit certain criteria then you most likely have the illness. Most psych's don't spend time with counseling anymore, it is usually a 15 minute med check. He will see you frequently while you are stabilizing on meds.
There are local mental health assoc. in almost every area, they are govt. sponsored and yu can see a psych and a counselor If you have heaalth insurance they have to cover psychiatrists just like any other Dr. Most have limits on counselors and have certain ones they pay for. My psych is out of network so I pay more but hes worth it. Ican see my counselor from my ins company 30 times in one year. Talk to your insurance company for referrals.

Here;s one for you. Lithium, the gold standard for treating Bipolar disorder is a completely natural salt. It is found in the soil, the food you eat and in the water you drink. Completely natural and the pharmacutical companies don't make a dime off of it, never have.
There are some natural things that may help some.... eating right exercising, etc.....and may even do the job in MILD cases. But in moderate to severe cases medication is necessary.... these disorders are the result of chemical imbalances in the brain.... would you tell a diabetic to stop taking insulin because doctors and drug companies just want to make money off of them.....
Seriously, people need to understand that just because they can't SEE what is broken in a mental illness doesn't make it not real, or not serious, or not life threatening. People refer to "pills" as toxic but if you want to look at it that way, every time you eat fast food you are doing damage to your body.... and you don't even get a benefit from it. At least the people who take psychiatric meds receive a tremendous benefit... some even are able to lead a fairly normal life which wouldn't be possible without the help of today's "toxic pills".

I guess so - in that extended extreme states of mind are usually bad for you, although they are occasionally prompted by the circumstances.
Most behavoirs, mind and body, are conciously controlled by the frontal or prefrontal cortex. Maybe this is the control for complex mental health issues, i.e. cognitive sets
But alternatively it could a physiological process - we know the brain releases certain hormones to "clean up" neurotransmitters regularly (which is what some drugs attempt to prevent i.e. SSRIs for depression - Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors) - so that would be artifically bringing homeostatis back. Once the neurotransmitters have reduced and the activity in that area of the brain dies down, so does that particular mind set.

There can be, and I think the way you achieve that is by fully understanding our emotions as humans. There are gonna be times when we will be depressed, happy, sad, hurt, apathetic because its the way we've been wired. When you go through times like that you have to see the big picture, and that will help you stay balanced through whatever you face.

Mental health finds a lot of its issues with managed care. Minimizing the costs of "fixing people" mentally is a very presumptuous thing. It means that people are expected to find relief in their symptoms within whatever window is alotted to therapists and psychiatrists to provide it (usually 20 sessions a year).
Oh, and don't get me started on psychiatry. The financial incentives at work there are monumental. People's disorders are being neglected for just sedating the symptoms away from people, while fostering a reliance on the chemicals and not giving enough time to change the behaviors or causal mechanisms that lead to the disorder in the first place.
Many more issues need to be directly examined. Making people emotionally and mentally healthy is not a little procedure. It's a continuous process that sometimes requires many more resources than the government, or insurance companies, would ever be willing to accept or admit.
Mental health is very different from physical health, but needs the topics should also be considered as connected elements in overall health. I would first like a candidate to be able to articulate this, and then I would like a candidate to suggest ways in which mental health services can avoid being dragged through the mud by the ever-diminishing dollar.
Answer by realst1
All presidential candidates should get a physical and mental health screening, as well as a credit check, resume check, and drug and alcohol screen. Why should a person we are considering to run the country have less investigation than someone who is going to run the cash register at Sear's?
If we had this, Bush would never have passed the drug and mental health screens and Cheney wouldn't have passed the alcohol and physical health screens.
Mental health? Get off the couch and take a walk, stop eating all of that high fructose corn syrup and get a good night's sleep and half of the depression will go away.
Answer by jjsgirlie
I actually work in mental health. We don't "fix" people - we help them find ways to cope with their illness and control it so the illness doesn't control them.
I think the government needs to pump more money into mental health system. In our state, there are alot of counties that are almost bankrupt and have to cut services because there just isn't money. Which is bad, because then, the mentally ill can't get help and they end up committed in a hospital which can cost the county $ 3,000 in one shot - when it would have only cost about $ 1000/yr to help them.
Answer by admited farter
I'd like the candidates to explain what they understand about mental health, and if they see it worth more funding or not and why. Many states have taken funding cuts recently and I'd like to understand how they think that is good for society.

OHP researchers and practitioners are concerned with a variety of psychosocial work characteristics that may be related to physical and mental health problems. The physical health problems range from accidental injury to cardiovascular disease. The mental health problems include psychological distress, burnout, and depression. OHP researchers and practitioners are also concerned with relation of psychosocial working conditions to health behaviors (eg, smoking and alcohol consumption) and workplace morale (eg, job satisfaction). Many people suffering mental health problems are the result of a chemical inbalance in their bodies.
Treatment is with medication which is a hit and miss trial till the doctor finds the one that works best. without chemistry and new drugs many people would never be able to live normal lives
Answer by Daniel
Yes. the unbalance of chemicals in the body are what trigger emotions and lots of other mental related things...I took a psychology class in college and it was more scientific related health stuff than what you see on tv...so you are on track if you talk about the chemical reactions in the brain that cause mental disorders.

yes, i was actualy talking about this today when my freind was writing out a paper similiar to yours, but hers tied in more to personality, and how it ca be effected if as a child you are not given the right vitamens, like vegies and fruit. we were seeing how it effects the persons life later on, compared to a healthy childs' diet, and how les likely they are to get a mental illness. if they had the right vitamens earlier on in their bodies. so yes it does effect mental health, espeially in childhood and eating your veggies ;)

Our bodies are governed by the internal chemistry provided by our glands and tissues.
There are three types of mental illnesses that are tied to chemical imbalances in the brain and the body:
Schizophrenia
Manic-Depressive or Bipolar illness
Endogenous or chemical depression.
Once these chronic illnesses are regulated on today's medications, they are controllable and the patient goes on to live normal productive lives. The medications are composed of certain chemical proteins that regulate our systems.
Sometimes, medications can help with sleep disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders by regulating brain chemicals and patterns.
Just as someone with diabetes has an insulin chemical imbalance in their bodies that must be corrected with diet and medication in order to live a healthy life....so, too, people with certain mental health issues must do the same. There is no difference at all.
