Why do so many people conclude that ADHD is caused by genetic components when we really do not know this?I just read an article in which the author interrviews a psychiatrist who claims "ADHD...is a highly genetic condition." (Link: http://news.health.com/2009/08/24/multitasking-harmful/3/ ) That bit of info the psychiatrist may have offered is not much better than a lie because there is no conclusive research in which you can claim there are mostly genetics to blame. This quote is from a link that cites much existing research: "The aetiology [etiology] of ADHD is essentially unknown. All of the above factors [neurophysiology, genetic factors, congenital factors, diet and environmental agents, familial factors, and co-morbidity with learning disability] have been implicated as playing some role. However, to date, their relative importance has not been determined. It is likely that a variety of contributing factors may operate in a vulnerable child to result in the behaviours of ADHD." So why do people keep trying to say ADHD is mostly caused by genetic components when we do not really know this?
(and BTW don't even mention concordant monozygotic twin studies. They don't prove ADHD is mostly genetic.)
