WASHINGTON - Congress on Wednesday passed a long-stalled bill inspired by the Virginia Tech shootings that would more easily flag prospective gun buyers who have documented mental health problems. The measure also would help states with the cost.
"Rather than focusing on improving the current laws prohibiting people with certain mental health disabilities from buying guns, the bill is now nothing more than a gun lobby wish list," said Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center. "It will waste millions of taxpayer dollars restoring the gun privileges of persons previously determined to present a danger to themselves or others."
The original bill would require any agency, such as the Veterans Administration or the Defense Department, to notify a person flagged as mentally ill and disqualified from buying or possessing a gun...
Thoughts?
Will the votes on this bill affect who you vote for in the Presidential election? Is this just a taste of what's in store for us if we elect the wrong person?

The guy at virginia tech wasn't supposed to have a gun anyway. They should instead eliminate all gun-free zones, which are actually shooting spree friendly zones.

Before you get concerned with this you should know that they are proposing to disarm Americans citizens altogether, thinking it will make people safer. Drugs are illegal but does that keep them off the street? If guns are banned I will just go down to XXXXX's (better not say his name) around the corner, as much as I loathe that fkkker I know he can hook me up with ANYTHING I want short of a tactical nuke. Mostly he's into glass and even worse I probably don't even want to know about.

I imagine depression would count as mentally unstable. How many Americans are affected by depression? A lot. So once an individual submits as being a depressive and wants medication, then he/she can't buy a gun. Once the individual has finally beats depression and gets off the medication, I imagine it will be near impossible to be allowed to buy a gun again since the individual is suceptible to becoming depressed again.
I imagine being marked down as mentally unstable would result in confiscation of the mentally unstable individual's current registered guns.
What is considered mentally unstable or mentally stable?
Hitler played this game and used it against dissent. Not cool.

I'm all for people being able to purchase guns. But do I honestly want people deemed mentally ill getting them? No more than I want felons getting them.
