This is in Kansas City by the way.
He has said those statements. He has threatened to kill himself and take anyone and everyone down with him

To my knowledge the only real way that a person can be put in a mental hospital against their will is if they are suicidal or homicidal; and have made statements about such. (ie I want to kill myself, I want to kill____) Unfortunately when people don't have good insurance mental hospitals often will turn patients in need away. Is he seeing a psychiatrist, therapist or doctor? If anyone of these health professionals treating him feels he needs to be put away for longer, they can make that recommendation which will usually ensure that he stays beyond a hold. Hope that helps some.
EDIT
If he has made such threats than you must call the hospital and let them know his exact threats and plans.

It is extremely hard to have someone committed nowadays, especially at times if they seem of sound mind. The only real solution is to try to get him to understand that this would be a good step not only for him but for the family. Remind him that you and your family will visit him often. Try to get him to understand that his irrational behaviour is concerning you and the safety of the family. Talk to him about seriously thinking about going to a place where he can receive help because next time he may end up in jail, if that happens you are worried you may not see him come out of jail.

I found two different numbers listed for Rainbow Mental Health; I'm not sure if you tried both of them already. First: (913) 789-5800 and the other: (913)384-1880. Hopefully one of those is the number that you need. You might also try asking someone at the facility he is being held at for a recommendation of where you could take him.
I'm not sure if you live in KCK or KCMO or which county, but Wyandotte County, KS offers services for residents.. here is the website: https://www.wyandotcenter.org/our-services
If you are in Johnson County: http://mentalhealth.jocogov.org/ and they even have some helpful links under the "mental health resources"
Jackson County has some helpful phone numbers and names of community mental health agencies as well as hospitals in the area: http://www.jacksongov.org/content/3273/3385/default.aspx
Good luck to you and I hope at least some of this information can provide the help you and your family need right now.
