Mental Health: Are mental health evaluations done before someone is accepted into the military?

Are mental health evaluations done before someone is accepted into the military?I work with homeless vets and almost all of them have some sort of personality disorders such as bi polar disorder. Only a few of them served in a war zone and several barely made it out of boot camp before getting discharged.
So i'm wondering, is there a screening process?
The vets I work with range from those who served in vietnam up through the current war.
