I think it can if you have been FORCED to to be admitted(though i could be wrong). If you choose to admit yourself i know it doesnt.

Well, in the UK it will stay on your mental health record just in case you are admitted again so that the staff can give you the best care. If you are admitted to another mental health trust they can request info about you if necessary.

If you haven't been sectioned under the mental health act no-one outside the health service will need to know, unless there are child/ adult protection concerns or someone feels that you or someone else is in danger (and it is somehow related to your mental health). If you have been sectioned I believe that it can effect matters such as emigration or getting certain jobs that require a high security clearance (secret services etc).
