Capital Health's Volunteer Program
Capital Health's Volunteer Program, Mental Health Services Dartmouth, recruits, screens and places volunteers in a variety of mental health settings that include the six inpatient units at the Nova Scotia Hospital, the two rehabilitation units at the East Coast Forensic Hospital, New Beginnings Clubhouse and the community mental health clinics in Cole Harbour Place, Belmont House and the Cobequid Centre. Volunteers carry out a variety of roles according to program needs at these different locations. They participate in transportation programs, dog therapy, friendly visiting, companionship, recreational groups, and music appreciation, to name a few. They come from all walks of life and possess a strong desire to have a positive impact on individuals living with mental illness. The Volunteer Services' high school component enhances a young student's community-based learning with the hope that their experience will assist in dispelling misconceptions about psychiatric illnesses.
