Can you purchase a gun if you have a history of mental health illness ?Can you purchase a gun if you have been hospitalized in psychiatry and for suicide attempts ?
And do they do a background check, and how exactly would they know if someone has a history of mental health issues ?

Probably not. Most places are required to do a background check. If they don't they can get in big trouble.

I may not live in the USA, but I am pretty sure if you have a mental health problem in the past you cannot purchase a gun due to your mental state, from watching the Bowling For Columbine documentary I am sure they ask a medical questionnaire and for your doctors details so then can do a check.

In Australia you can't but we have really tight gun control laws here. They find out about it because there is an application process to get a licence that you need to have & part of that includes them being able to access you health records under the Freedom of Information Act (you have to give your consent which is part of the application)
