There may be more than one role. In Kansas (not sure about other states) a master's level social worker can do therapy just the same as a psychologist with the exception of psychological testing. They might also work with the parents, school, etc. on any work that needs to be coordinated with therapy. If there are specific difficult situations at home, such as poverty, they may help to find available community services.

I am a master's level social worker and in Missouri a social worker can do a number of things such as therapy, advocate for the patient to get the services they need, be a mediator between the patient and other community resources, connect the patient to other needed resources. The social worker can also be a case manager to the patient and the family.
