Can you Recognize Mental Illness in a Person? Yes? BUT, can you recognize MENTAL HEALTH in a Person?

Can you Recognize Mental Illness in a Person? Yes? BUT, can you recognize MENTAL HEALTH in a Person?Medical Doctors have long known that to accurately understand physical illnesses and investigate their causes (Physical Illnesses), they not only need to look at WHY some persons develope certain diseases BUT ALSO they look at WHY some persons DO NOT develope certain diseases. For example, Why do some persons develope cancer and some do not? Do persons who develope Cancer SHARE CERTAIN CHARATERISTICS? Do the life style of Persons who DO NOT develope cancer differ from those WHO DO? And if so, What are those differences? The same concept can be applied to Mental Illnesses. One way of investigating Mental Illness, is by studying "Mental Health." If I asked you the Charateristics of someone who is Mentally iLL, you would have no problem answering, but my QUESTION TO YOU is this: (1) What are the Characteristics of a person who is enjoying "Mental Health" or in other words someone who is not Mentally Ill? (2) Describe the personality of someone who is "Mentally Healthy?"

Some characteristics of a mentally healthy person:

1. Is aware of who they are and what their goals are.
2. Looks at things from different points of view, not just their own
3. Seeks to understand the world rather than just accepting things the way are.
4. Rationally thinks about things vs emotionally reacting
5. Is not swayed by societal bullcrap as this can lead to mass histeria. Example: Naming a "mental disease" makes it easier for some to use it as an excuse to act like a fool. Makes it more acceptable to have such a disease so instead of fighting it and keep their head straight they just give in because its "okay"

These are some signs I've seen that would indicate a healthy mind.

I think you can tell someone is mentally healthy by their response to a situation. If you were to, for example, lose your job due to downsizing. A person with good mental health would take it in stride, not without worry of course, but what is he/she to do, stuff happens. They go about looking at the classifieds for a new job rather than getting depressed, worrying obsessively about how they are going to pay their bills, etc. I think a person who is healthy mentally is able to take things that happen to them in stride, without obsessing or overreacting or being irrational.

My intro to sociology course spent a lot of time discussing sanity and insanity. My professor made a point that it was easy to define insanity, with lots of fancy labels, BUT, he said the definition of sanity was: NOT insane! He also made the excellent point, that since sanity is often dependent on social mores, at different times many people have been considered insane, who are today considered sane. These people thought differently than the "majority" of society, and were treated for being mentally ill or insane, such as women who wanted to remain unmarried, or women who were lesbians or men who were homosexual.

Good question..
