Advantages: the rights of the patient are protected, which could lead to reduced concern within a patient regarding the insidious stigma associated with mental illness. Plus, it is the law.
Disadvantages: it can be a pain in the ass for both the patient and staff when it comes to filling out releases of information in order to talk to anyone outside of the facility/hospital about the patient's care. The required for releases of information can also make it difficult to obtain information about the patient from previous providers.
All in all, I think most patients appreciate the privacy they are afforded. Along with HIPPA, confidentiality is a tool that can help patients open up and be more involved in their treatment without fear of everyone (those outside of the treatment team) judging them.
