Mental Health: Is my neighbour likely to be sectioned under the mental health act, should I be fearful of him do you think?

Is my neighbour likely to be sectioned under the mental health act, should I be fearful of him do you think? He has told me that he suffers from schizophrenia and that he has previously been sectioned. He has lived in the flat beneath me for approximately one year, in which time he has been no bother at all.

Approx 6 weeks ago he gave me a letter to read which he had written to Cheryl Cole declaring his love for her in the style of a poem, he asked me how he could get in touch with her etc etc, I said I didn't know and made a sharp exit.

Yesterday evening he knocked on my door, I answered without thinking anything of it as he is my neighbour, I am in my 20's and live alone and was a little freaked out afterwards. He was telling me that MI5 have been torturing him for the last 20 years and that spooks are hiding in the shadows watching and spying on him, he asked me what he should do (why he thinks I would know), I told him he should contact a solicitor (I didn't know what else to say as I couldn't exactly turn round and tell him to get real!!) anyways he was there about 15 minutes telling me all this.

I called out of hours social services at reported it to them as I am concerned for him, as well as being unnerved myself.

Today he catches me going out and starts telling me how MI5 are trying to contact him through The Sun newspaper, he was telling me how various stories which were printed are secret messages to him. Example is that Ronaldo has apparetly paid the mother of his baby £10m to keep quiet, he believes that this is a message to him from MI5 saying he will get £10m if he keeps quiet about the torture.

Again I rang social services mental health team.

I feel so sorry for him that he believes all this stuff, it must be awful for him. But he seems to want to keep confiding in me and he knows when I am in as he can hear me walking about and stuff. I don't think he is a danger to me, but I am still nervous. I am going to sleep at my mums tonight I think.

Do you think he is on the edge of a breakdown/relapse? This can't be normal!!!

You did the right thing by calling social services. His symptoms are beyond reasonable for a person with schizophrenia. It is quite likely that he is not taking his meds or that they are no longer working for him. He will likely need to be sectioned to get re-stabilized before he can return to his flat. He is not at all likely to be dangerous, but his symptoms will only worsen until he gets treatment.

he has to be under the mental health team in your area, and should have a CPN (community psychiatric nurse) who visits him every week. if this isn't happening then it is very poor care on their part. it sounds as though he has probably stopped taking his medication, which is why CPN's visit to ensure his mental health is ok, and that he is taking his meds. he is no harm to you, but is in a vulnerable state at the moment and could do something to hurt himself rather than other people. if i were you i would phone your nearest mental health clinic/hospital and ask to be put through to the CPN department, tell them what you have witnessed, and somebody should come out and see him. he will probably be admitted for a while until his medication is sorted out. and so long as he takes his meds properly he will be fine. it is good that you have tried to get social services, and you try to talk to him. he needs support and care. i know it is a bit scary when people have these strange beliefs, but it is more scary to the person having them. so phone the mental health team and don't stop until you speak to a Mental health nurse or CPN. he can only get worse, and if he thinks he is going to be hurt, he might do something harmful to himself. but good on you for caring. he is part of the care in the community, unfortunately there's not much care or community nowadays. but you are one of them. all the best.
