How to start a support group







How to start a support group in the mental health feild. Please see my first video at www.youtube.com 1.Go to Recovery Innovations to get familiar with the Recovery Model of Mental Health: www.recoveryinnovations.org 2.Get familiar with Peer Employment Training: laceejewelrydesigns.com 3. If not a customer of a mental health clinic in your area (if you have been diagnosed in the past with a mental health condition) find a mental health clinic in your city/county. 4. Develop relationships 5. Ask who the mental health clinic partners with. 6. Go to that partner (hopefully you can find a Peer Run Center that uses the Recovery Model). If the partner is a non-profit, that is better. 7. Go to the classes at the non-profit. You need to make connections and network with others. You need to get to know others. You don't want them to only know you - you need to get to know them as well. Relationships are a two way road. 8. Observe what goes on after the classes are over. Does NAMI come in and use that facility for their own support groups? Does another group or organization use that facility for another support group? If yes, you may have a chance there. 9. After you have developed a relationship with the County Mental Health System you are in and after you have been going to the a) Peer Run Center or b) non profit - ASK the manager or director if you can create a support group and use their facility. 10.
