A serious question here about the connection between God and mental health?

A serious question here about the connection between God and mental health? Why do so many Christians come here and ask for mental health advice instead of going out and getting treatment?

And why are so many responses to the effect of "Read your Bible," "Pray," "Trust in the Lord to take away your pain"?

It drives me nuts! Mental illness - depression, schizophrenia, whatever, etc. - is NOT something you should gamble on! There is help available, why not utilize it? I absolutely cannot fathom why anyone would encourage another human being to essentially take their life into their own hands like that. As a psych student, and as someone who has lost friends and family to the devastating effects of untreated mental illness, responses that completely disregard the benefits of proper psychiatric care break my heart.

Does anyone have any documentation of "God" curing their mental illness? I'm not knocking religion here (regardless of my personal thoughts on the matter); I feel that it is destructive thinking to entrust your health to a being that does not have a physical form and is, therefore, unable to care for you.

Please, someone, help me understand.
I am *not* looking for a way to call Christian's "mental."

The answers some of those Christians gave are simply dangerous! Ignoring a mental health problem will not make it go away, it will only make it worse! I'm serious, why do people think God will cure their problems instead of taking a more proactive stance?
Christians*

Pardon.
Um, I'm sorry if some of you didn't read my entire question and misinterpreted it to be an attack on your religion. If you had read the whole thing, you would see that it was not. For those of you who *did* read and understand what I was asking - thank you.

Hardly anyone does that on here

I think you are just looking for a way to get people to start calling Christians mental.

Even if you dont believe in God (and thats your right) there is something else to it.
Being a psych student you should know about the phenomenon of the placebo effect.
If a person believes something enough then they can bring themselves to feeling better or being cured.
Call it God or call it something that the human brain is capable of.

I know what you mean about untreated mental illness though. Effected people need to seek treatment. God helps those who help themselves.

I feel slightly less concerned about people advising mental illness sufferers to trust in God than i am about Scientologists who actively prevent their members and members families from going to mental health professionals for treatment. I have first hand experience in this and it has even led to deaths in some cases. Scary.

God understand mental illness. But he doesnt see it as an "illness" but a way in which he created a person special. Everyone has trials and tribulations in their life. some internally, and some externally.

I don't understand either. Maybe they have been raised to believe that if anything is wrong in your life it must be because the person doesn't have God in their life. I guess they think that if you are saved (by their version of being saved) you wouldn't have any problems. Everything good is because of faith in their God and anything and everything that is wrong is because the Devil has his grip on you. Sad, I know. People die, and people kill because they think God told them or the Devil told them. They think they are evil, it's all very disturbing and all so very dangerous. It's not God, it's mans religion that has people so F&%ked up.
I have heard of more cases than I wanted to, where mothers have killed their children to save them in the name of Christianity. I could go on and on but I'll stop at religions can be very dangerous to the human psyche.
