Can you request a mental health evaluation on a healthcare provider?

Can you request a mental health evaluation on a healthcare provider?I heard that you can. There is a nurse at a local er that seems mentally ill to me. I question her ability to care for people. She acts really strangely.

Perhaps out of moral duty, I should bring it up to the hospital and the Texas State Department of Health.

First let me say that I think that its good that you are looking out for the welfare of others. I think there may be lower levels to start though. One, we don't know whether this nurse is not already under psychiatric care and observation. A place to start may be going to customer service and letting your concerns be known. In most states, it is always better for the provider to enter treatment voluntarily than to have to be reported to the board. This would give the nurse's supervisors a chance to confront her and encourage her to get help. As a physician and the chairman of my hospital's provider wellness committee, I would hope that if I were ill thats where someone would start with me rather than go to the board of medicine directly.

If that doesn't work and you still have concerns or you think the ER won't take you seriously, you should next contact the board of medicine or health professions for your state. All nurses and physicians must have a state license to practice and most licensing bodies have a number you can call to report a potentially impaired provider. I would google your state's website for the contact info.

Are you like a frequent flyer at this emergency room and have been treated by this psycho nurse on those occasions? Then by all means report her. If you work with her then, again, by all means report her. We can't have deranged medical health professionals looking after us. However, I'm sure that any nurse with a mental illness working in a respectable hospital would be obvious to those sane doctors and nurses (with their trained eyes to such) around her. If she's truly mentally incompetent, it's doubtful you would be the only one who has noticed.

If it's a moral crusade you are seeking, there's more fertile soil to campaign against in the world.
