I don't know this valley mental health group but what they mean is that you won't get well unless you want to and put in the effort required. While it is largely true you are responsible for your thoughts and actions, some mental conditions can alter the way you think and behave, often in a way that is not within in the accepted range of 'normal' healthy behaviour. This is why mental illness is such a serious health issue and something you need to be proactive about.

You are responsible for your own thoughts and behavior.
That is what they said and that is what it means.

So if they "help" you learn how to "behave normally" then they caused your good behaviour? Ask them that.

• You sound a bit LOUD and ANGRY and this is understandable. To say that you are responsible and cause your own problems is not quite accurate. They are your thoughts or better, beliefs which lead to your behaviors and feelings, but you are not responsible or TO BLAME for having those beliefs. You might do well to take responsibility for discovering which of your beliefs (about yourself, others and the world) are causing you difficulties and consider changing them. It's up to you, but if you hold on to beliefs that lead to disturbance, you will feel disturbed and might act (poorly) based on those feelings.

I usually tell the dog poop story. Joe exists in four identical worlds. In each one on a nice sunny day Joe steps in identical dog poop, but in each he has a different consequent emotion. In one he gets angry, in another he gets depressed, in another he gets anxious, and in one he smiles. In the first he believes that people who don't clean up after their dogs should be severely punished and their dogs should burn in hell on a sharp stick next to them. The depressed guy believes that stepping in poop proves what an inattentive jerk he is. Joe anxious is fearful that someone saw him step in poop and will think him to be a jerk which he further believes would be awful. The last Joe believes that he was lucky he wore shoes instead of going bare foot and proceeds to find a garden hose. SO, I wouldn't blame anyone for their upset, but the upset was not CAUSED so much by the Activating Event or Adversity. Dog poop doesn't make one feel or act in any specific way. It will likely be a bother to anyone - that's reality, but anything beyond just another hassle is due to the person's own belief system and their demands.

• You are not to blame for those beliefs, but if anyone is going to figure out which ones (Hint: look for the MUSTs and NEEDs and GOTTAs - that is absolutistic demands) are problematic and by practice, practice and more practice and thought and acceptance change those beliefs to more helpful beliefs (Hint: preferences rather than demands), it's going to be you or you and your therapist from Valley Mental Health. Show that therapist this answer and see what she or he thinks.
