Mental Health: What job do you do with your mental health problem?

What job do you do with your mental health problem? If you have a mental health problem and go to work, what do you work as? What aspects do you find most difficult, if any?
I have borderline personality disorder and would like to get a new job, so any ideas would be great.

Try to see a counselor and your psychiatrist, they are the best ones to give you advise on this.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

I have Bipolar 1 with psychosis. I have always worked full time. I am in upper level management for a finance firm. good career and I get paid better than 70% of the people in the country. I manage this by staying on my meds and moving quickly to get mood shifts under control before the go bad..... on the rare occasion that it gets out of control and I become psychotic I go to the hospital and do soem heavy duty drugs for a week or so then I go back to work.... Many man people have managed to succeed despite having a mental illness... I think the key is that the illness is not me... just like if I had diabetes I would have to manage it.. I have Bipolar and I manage it.

My husband has borderline Personality Disorder and is Bipolar and it has been really hard for him to keep a job. He tends to like the jobs that he works with less people. He kept his night audit job (Hotel) for longer than any of his other jobs and he even went out and got another night audit job and he kept that for awhile too. He doesn't get along with people well so having less people to deal with the better. He always had a hard time going to sleep at night too so this worked well. He went through one of his depression modes and didn't show up for work for sevral days which got him fired from the last one. He is now unemployed, and working on getting mental help.

I have Bipolar 1. I worked as a national journalist for about 12 years, went to Georgetown law school, and worked as a solo practitioner in criminal and juvenile law. It was rough at times. Then I was assaulted and got a head injury, resulting in cognitive deficiencies (brain injury) that made it hard to practice. I went on disability, and work a very small part-time job as my church custodian/janitor. My self confidence has dropped since the assault.

I would consult a counselor before starting a job. My sister had BPD and found working with animals or working solo the best scenario. Part-time work or low stress work may be the best route, as well.

Best of luck to you in 2011!!
