Mental Health: Is it true colleges won't accept you if your suicidal/have a history of mental health problems?

Is it true colleges won't accept you if your suicidal/have a history of mental health problems? If your suicidal, have attempted suicide, bipolar, ect?

No. In most cases there would be no way for a college to find that out. Further it is illegal for them discriminate for that reason. Mental Health diagnoses are considered a disabilities and are therefore protected by the American's with Disabilities Act. The school has to actually make reasonable accomodations to help you in school, as long as you can perform the required functions of being a student. Good luck.

Due to the rash of students killing fellow students, yes colleges are know considering the mental health of applicants. Sad to say but it a necessity of modern times to insure the well being of the entire student body.

No. They have no way of obtaining that information without your approval. If it is an impediment and it prevents you from focusing you can, after being admitted to school, let them know about this problem just so they are aware of the situation. In some cases, if the student wishes to live in the dorms but tells them that they have some sort of mental health issue they can allow for the student to have his own room with a written letter from a doctor. Either way, they wouldn't deny your acceptance due to a mental disorder, this is discrimination. You have to be mentally prepared to attend college. Now, suicidal? That's a whole 'nother story. If you have a history of violence I doubt an accredited school would admit you. This is a precautionary measure taken to prevent further disasters.
