Can the CAMS mental health team diagnose depression?

Can the CAMS mental health team diagnose depression?I went to see them yesterday for counselling and they said I had all the symptoms of depression and they gave a mood and feelings sheet thing and I've filled it in. When I go back there, can they actually dignose me as depressed or will they tell my GP? And if I'm self harming and have suicidal thoughts at least 3 times a week, will they prescribe me antidepressants? Thanks guys x

what is the CAMs mental health team? if you are assessed by a mental health team and they diagnose depression they will inform your GP.

They can diagnose depression yes. I think you might have to go through your GP where the antidepressants are concerned, thats what I did but only because I was in urgent need of help. Your age is also a big issue, they would be very very reluctant to put a 13/14 year old on antideprssants. I'm 17 and they were reluctant even to prescribe them to me. Also, antidepressants aren't the only answer to depression, I went on them just three months ago and I've been seriously depressed for 6 yrs and they're not even helping me. I think you should try seeking help and speaking to your counsellor at CAMHS before you consider/talk about medication.

By filling out the mood and stress sheets they will be able to state whether you have depression according to the answers that you chose. If the diagnosis of depression is made then they will be able to refer you to a doctor who is trained in the mental field who will be able to prescribe medication. Don't any time go by at this time if you feel like self harming yourself or committing suicide. Get in touch with someone as soon as possible (now if possible) and let them know just how severe the symptoms you are now experiencing. The longer you wait the possibility of these symptoms becoming more severe is greater. I have been there and I know that the sooner you ask for help the better the outcome for you and your future.

CAMHS have a variety of mental health professionals working for them. To be diagnosed they would send you to their psychiatrist who can diagnose you and also prescribed medication if they feel it is needed. They will inform everything to your doctor so if you need more medication then you can get it from your doctor as well.

They may decide medication is not for you and find other option within the CAMHS such as therapy, workshops etc

Hope this helped
