How should I choose my gender therapist?

How should I choose my gender therapist?I am a freshman in college right now and I don't have to much money right now, and I don't have a job either. I want to start working on my transition already. The dilemma is that there is a LMHC (liscensed mental health counsolor) that used to be my academic counsoler in highschool, It was always hard for me to talk to her. The thing is that she has a sliding fee and gives some people, such as students, discounts. I was thinking since I have known her for two years she would give me a discount on therapy. I am not sure if I should go to her, she has said things that has hurt my feelings in the past such as calling me Miss, which I hate so much. Because I am a man stuck in a womans body. Do you think I should go to her so I can start transitioning right away, by getting my first recomendation letter, she doesn't prescribe medicine so she can't prescribe hormone's to me if she diagnosis me. Should I wait for another therapist to come along who might be just right for me and easy to talk to, and when I have more money, or should I go to her?
I am a transman

I think you would be much more comfortable with a counselor who doesn't know you from the past, as she sounds judgmental and prejudicial, and those are not good qualities for someone in her profession. Additionally, I don't think she would be of much help to you, and would probably be detrimental. It sounds as though the only reason you would want to use her is because you think you'd get a discount. I sort of doubt that. If money is the deterrent, then I'd suggest you wait until you think you can afford to pay a little more and use someone else. I understand that you're anxious to get started on your transitioning right away. Can you possibly get a transition reference from someone other than a counselor? If so, I'd recommend that you do that. Otherwise, it might be worth the wait, both for getting someone else as a counselor, and saving money to get your transition. Good luck!

You may be able to get free therapy on campus. Check out your options.
Keep in mind though that therapy is not about making you feel good. She may have made you uncomfortable in the past but it may be all part of the recovery process. You can call your therapist on things that you don't like that they said. Remember, therapists are people too. It's possible that she is not a good fit for you...If she is helping you, stick with it. It takes time but in the end it works out. If she is not helping you, it's kind of pointless to continue with her even if she is cheaper...
Good luck!
